ok, i just bought a 1994 honda del sol si. It has 158k. Anyways the guy said it does not run and does not know the problem. When i emptied out the used oilo there was about a half a quart. So i filled it up, put on a new filter, bought a new batterry, cleaned the sparkplugs off because 2 of them were not screwed in tight and scummy. Now i got the thing to start and there is a loud noise which sounds like a rod whipping around under the hood. So i assuming i blew a rod. What i am wondering is what you think the problem is and what are some options to solve this. Like a rebuild or just a whole new motor. And if i buy a new motor do i need a short block or longblock. I am pretty new in the car scene but just wanna get this running for as cheap as i can. Let me know some prices or any info you know. All help is apprecitaed

We do have a few Honda owners in here that maybe able to help out. I'm sure they'll chime in sooner or later.

IMO, I'd get the engine checked out first by a trusted mechanic. Sorry I'm no help.

I am on spring break this week, how close are you to Eden Prairie? I can check it out if you want, I worked at Hopkins Honda for 4 years, sounds like it has a spun bearing.

B16A3 DOHC VTEC or is it a D16 SOHC VTEC engine?

The D16s are pretty cheap and plentiful, best thing to do would be swap a used engine in.

i'd trash the motor and get a swap. Any honda motor is a plug and play. Find a b18c1(need ecu to control vtec unless your del sol is the one with b16 vtec) and use a b16a2 tranny, the b16 tranny is shorter than that of the b18 series trannies and it has a LSD. this could be a 1-4k fixed but the car will be nice and fun after wards.

If you just looking for something reliable, you should just replace that motor with the same model, but if your looking for a little more go with something bigger like a B18 series. Those motors will last a very long time if its maintained. IMO if its a bearing its not worth rebuilding cuz you can get a new motor for a lot cheaper.

    Enjoy,

well, thats a vtec motor alright. So u can pretty much swap in any D or B series motor into it. You can even swap in the H22 Prelude engine. The B16(DOHC DelSol/99-00 Civic SI) tranny does not have LSD and its gears are shorter than the b18b(LS) and b18c1(GSR) trannies, but not shorter than the b18c5(type r), which has LSD. But.....

since u just want to get it running for a cheap price, I think $700 is too expensive for a sohc motor. Try surfing the web, $400-$600 is more reasonably priced for the D-series engines. Don't look into DOHC Vtec engines (B-series/H-series) because prices jump up to $1k-5k, depending on what you buy. Hope this helps. And hehe honestly, I have an STI now but I miss the smooth shiftin from my old Honda.
