I do not smoke, and pretty much just use the adapter for my bluetooth gps and pocket pc phone.

I normaly take the phone with me wherever I go but the gps always stays put. it has a feature that cant be disabled where it powers off after 10 minutes if im not using it and it has no power going to it. it only uses 140ma when not in use so I would like it to just always stay on.

otherwise, would it be about as easy to install a second power adapter port that has constant power? Ill take whatever tips anyone can throw.

A quick and easy way would be to change the source of the power to the radio harness. There is a wire that has power all the time. It's for the memory on your radio.

you can run a 12v line and splice it into the power line for the gps.
then you dont have cables everywhere.

I would (and did in my loyale) pull a second cigarette lighter from something at the junkyard, and install it someplace hidden, like the glovebox somewhere. and hardwire it.

older subaru GL/loyales have a little nut on the back of the lighter, and then it just slides out, then to install it on something else, you can just cut/drill a hole the right size, slide it in, and tighten. then wire it in, and it looks all pro!

I would get a cheap 12v lighter socket from radio shack or whatever, hook it up to the always-on radio power wire, then plug the GPS power supply into it and stuff the whole mess up behind the glove box or behind the radio someplace and just let the power cord dangle out where you need it. Pulling the radio and removing the glove box aren't too hard.

I have the aux in cord for my iPod just running out the bottom of the center console into the passenger footwell.

hmm, im gonna have to look at some of your decks, I was wanting to run an input from my phone into my speakers but since the stock deck doesnt i havent ever gotten to it. I realy like having multidisk in the front, but wish i had mp3, wma and audio in. I have also wondered what people then do with the 2nd half of the old deck that is then empty. Ill have to make sure to make it to friday's meet and peek inside some cars.

I like the idea of running another cigarette adapter with fulltime power in the glove box. Then I could run a notebook or camcorder at the same time too. Ill have to look at how to do that. then have the cable going from my gps+phone to small cutouts so no cable is showing like you guys are saying. TY for the responces!

You can get a factory cubbyhole or a million different aftermarket ones to fill up the hole in the dash if you install a single DIN deck in there.

If you want to be a pimp you can buy the double-DIN sized aftermarket deck.

if you wanna do it right, i'd run wires all the way out to the battery and fuse them.
The little always on power wire for the stereo wasn't meant to handle some of the loads that can be put on a cig lighter outlet.

Stuff like air compressors, jumpers, etc.. will all probably blow the little like, 2A fuse that's on that line.

Well, as long as it doesn't actually blow the fuse, its not causing a problem. If the fuse goes, then its time for a more serious wiring job. He said he was just running a GPS unit.
