Not sure if I should start a new thread with this, I got this when I searched, but figured I'd start a new thread b/c this ones different (http://mnsubaru.com/forums/showthread.php?t=32137) I've got an 02 WRX, and the gas light snuck up on me when I was kinda in the middle of nowhere. How long have you guys gone on E? Got any stories? I didn't even check yet if the book tells you how long you've got after the Gas Light comes on. I just like to know on a new-to-me car how long I've got, especially when I'm in the middle of nowhere and it sneaks up on me. Thanks!
I believe depending on your driving habits, maybe 20-30 miles... remember on a fuel injected car it isnt recommended to run too close to empty... the myth is it can make it more susceptible to sucking up the crud in the bottom of the tank easier, which in turns puts extra strain on your pump... but... part of me figures if htere is crap in your tank it is sloshing around and would get sucked up anyways.. all I know is my personal choice if I am at a 1/4 of a tank of gas.. I fill up
when i bought my wrx, the dealership gave me a loaner for the weekend because of some work that needed to be done to it. they gave me an 07 impreza sedan, and I went just 4 miles after the light came on and ended up coasting into the gas station. (we were in the middle of nowhere) now with my wrx, i try to keep it atleast at half a tank.
i've gone 30+ miles in my wrx with the light on, a buddy of mine's gf had a 07 impreza which only ran 4 miles after the light pops on...guess it's different for every car
I believe my 06 owner's manual states that approximately 1.4gal remains when the light pops on. It was right in there. I've gone up to 30 miles on it before with no problems.
Yeah, I've heard approximately 4 gallons when the light comes on or something. Not sure if they changed that. Although, last time my light came on I was a mile from the gas station, I filled it to the top and it was 13 gallons. That would mean that it was around 3 gallons left in the tank when the light came on...which if it was highway driving, would be about 60-70 miles or so.
Yeah, cars 101 says 15.9 gallons for the WRX gas tank size. I usually fill up right above "E" and typically only fill up around 12 gallons.
With the 02 I can say I've gone over 30 miles with it on before it was modded. Now, once it comes on, it goes pretty quick.
Get a 3Gallon Gasoline container full with gas. Drive your car til the light pops., zero your tripometer now drive until it dies, look at miles ran. Fill up your tank.
Simple....dont let it get to E...I normally go to just above E or if I now there may not be too many stations Fill up b4 trip...
Neat idea, except in town driving is different than highway driving. So a mileage count isn't going to do you any good. Today I did it again, I pulled into the gas station just as the light came on. I filled the tank...12.9 gallons to fill it. SO, my light comes on when I have 3 gallons left.
On my '96 L (no gas light) if you are on "E" the tank has about 4 cups of gas left. I ran it to E one time and had to drive another 10 miles to a gas station. The '96L has a 13.1 gallon tank, I put in 13.05 gallons.
I also have an 02 wrx. I have had as much as 3 gallons and change when the gas fill light came on and I have also had the car run outta gas on a road trip on the exit ramp at around 16 miles after the light came on. Needle was in the same place. (And yes, I should not have let it get close to empty especially in winter.) Winter vs summer will have some effect in favour of summer.
The other thing to remember is that when you run you gas level down that low, the pump is no longer in the gas. That is where a lot of pump failures come from. The pump being in the gas keeps it cool, and when its just hanging in the air, they do get hot. Russ
I'm prolly gonna get flamed for this but I rarely fill up unless the light is on, haven't been burned yet I think I have gone over 40 miles with the light on.
my 93 impreza doesn't have a light... I found that out. my wife like to always keep 1/4 tank in the car, drives her nuts to go below that.
I've gone on E for almost 25 minutes before. I swear its different for every car. I was driving my friends 02 eclipse for a few weeks and the minute it hit E and the light came on the car ran out of gas like 30 seconds later it sucked.
My Fiero didn't have a light either. I knew it was really low when I heard the fuel pump spin up reeeeeally high. I hit the brakes to slosh the gas and it got quieter again. lol Kept having to do that up a hill for about a mile. Kinda scary! Then there was my Caprice (old lady car) the light came on when there was over 100 miles left on the tank. Almost 4 gallons! haha
my o7 has 14.7 tank, and when the light comes on im at 13.2 galons used, so 1.5 left, and have gone as far as 45 miles and put in 14.52 gallons on that fill.. good road trip info.. especially in remote areas, like montanna, or north dakota on your way to washington for an awesome rally
When I had my WRX I had the light come on at 46th Ave/35W and made it to downtown Northfield, where I coasted into a gas station from a block away. That's right around 40-45 miles. IIRC the manual says it'll come on with around 2 gallons left.
That's what the screen in the pickup at the tank and your fuel filter are for I'd be more worried about stuff the screen doesn't stop getting into your fuel pump and wearing on that. However pumps have their own, more fine, screens/mesh protecting them as well. Problem is nobody ever changes those until the pump burns up. Back to the subject; I haven't seen my E light come on yet. ('97 OBS) and I've ran it below the E mark many times. I don't know when it turns on or if it's burnt out! I've ran it so low that it took 12.5 to fill it back up; I thought for sure the light would have come on from that but it didnt. I've driven over 30 miles when the hand was on the E mark.
This is very true I am the worst driver ever when I am really high. I rarely ever stall the car or anything but my shifting is terrible.
