I'm seriously planning on buying a used Subie but worried about the 2.5 liter NA engine head gaskets going bad and leaking on the subies ranging from 1998 to 2003

So I'm just wondering how much it would cost to get the head gaskets work done from a subie specialist private party and the Morrie's subaru dealership.

well in those years there are SOHC and DOHC 2.5s, DOHCs being a bit harder to work on from a paying standpoint. 2000 was the first year for the SOHC in the outback/legacy, 1999 in the impreza and forester.

Based on subie's 2.5 liter head gasket endurance, I've heard that the SOHCs have a chance to leak oil or coolant externally and the DOHCs have a chance to leak oil or coolant internally to the pistons.

Correct, the DOHC being a much bigger deal because they overheat as a result of the internal leak.

The OP asked about a cost estimate for head gasket replacement. I think I have both the oil and coolant leak issues on my 2003 Forester. I am interested in the same information, and I'm getting nearly tired enough of cleaning up the oil spot on the garage floor to spend the money. That, and the oil problem is getting worse.
