Ok, I am working on pulling my tranny out to put in a new clutch and right now I am a little stuck on how to get the front drive shafts off the tranny. I have the spring pins out, but the drive shafts cannot slide out far enough to detach from the transmission. I have the front of the car up on ramps and the back jacked way up... do I need to jack the front up and then support the frame on jack stands so that the front wheels hang down? I feel like that would give me some more room for the drive shafts to slide out the sides of the transmission. If not this, what does everyone else do? Thanks in advance. 2002 wrx wagon
Yeah, I think jacking it up would help. When Fuji did mine I had the whole car jacked up and he was able to push the tranny far enough to either side to get the axles to slide off. Otherwise when I changed an axle on my car, I just unbolted the front strut and that allowed the hub to tip out far enough to slide the axle off, but again the front of the car has to be jacked up to do that. Hope that helps.
what i usually do is jack the car up, unbolt front wheels, take out the spring pins, and unbolt the 2 bolts that attach the shocks to the axle. this allows you to tilt the front rotors out which then pulls the axles out of the tranny.
I didn't take any of the suspension apart. With the transmission cross member out you can swing the transmission to the left in order to get the drive shaft off of it and vice versa for the other side. Also make sure to take the pins out of the cv shaft.
well I am in the process of trying to get the two bolts out of the bottom of the strut mount BUT!.. the damn top bolt on my drivers left is being held in the strut with the force Odin. So far we have broke a 3/8 inch drive, bent a c clamp, hit it with a sledge hammer, and soaked it multiple times in penetraiting oil. I think something is ultra messed up inside. I think the lob on the bolt is mushroomed out in there. I have no idea how we are going to get that off. I think I am going to switch over to the, move the transmission to the right, to get the left drive shaft off. Thanks for the help so far. Wish me luck. Back to the garage....
put a torch on the bottom strut bolts..that should help. also, use a impact socket because it wont break. btw, dont try to loosen the bolt, loosen the nut.
When wagonl did my clutch he left the axles in and we slid back the tranny enough to replace the clutch. This was on a 96 impreza with a 1.8l. This might help.
its rusted in... if you get it out hit it with some antiseize before putting it back in... btu you will need an impact most likely to loosen it... oh yeah and an alignment when done
You mean the shocks to the hub/knuckle assembly. If you bolted your shocks to your axle you would have invented some sort of new vehicle.
Personally, I like to pop the lower ball joint out of the knuckle. It lets the knuckle swing out to give the axel enough room to slide off the tranny stub. If you go that route, you aren't messing with your alignment.
Well, I used Iroc-Z'z method and was able to push the tranny over just enough to get the shaft detached. Thanks for the hint. The bolt, it will have to stay for now. I was thinking about just bringing it in for an alignment and have them work on it. Poor mechanics are going to be in for a treat. Almost got everything put back together last night. Just exhaust (turbo back), fluid changes, and intercooler left to do. Let's hope everything is and will be back together correctly. Thanks again for all the help guys. MNSubaru strikes again.
Just got done with the project about an hour ago. Fingers will still be crossed for the next day or two, but everything seemed to be working well on the test drive. Thanks again.
