I am working on convincing beth to let me get a bike. so I was going to start taking steps toward getting my license so when I can get a bike I am ready to go.

so, what options are there to get one and what do you recommend for the best way to do it??

    thanks

go to dmv, take test about what sign means what and so on. 15 mins later you have permit. Then later once you have bike...go back and take test on bike. Receive license.

or take the road course to better your knowledge if you have none...

Well bill what i did is i got my permit first. That way i can practice driving the bike (with some restrictions) before i take the test.

Go to Apple Valley or Chan (I've gotten my permit at both ... yeah I've had two permits) buy a bike and take your license with it. Thats what I would do at least, although you may not take my advice.

Looks like this ^ is the census.

Well as they said, you need to get a permit first. Learn to ride with your permit and then you can go take the test at the DMV for your license. BUT, the test is very difficult on any decent sized bike. It's all pretty much under 5mph and is very tight slow turning. I know many people who have been riding for years and it took them many tries to pass, especially on a sport bike.

There is another option though, which I would highly recommend - especially if you have never ridden a motorcycle before. You can go take the MSF (Motorcycle Safety Foundation) safety course which is 3 days long and will teach you everything you need to know from the very beginning. You ride the bikes they provide you and if you pass their test on their little bikes (200cc max) you then get your permit stamped and go renew your license at the DMV. That is what I did, mostly since my girlfriend wanted to learn to ride and get her license too, which she did.

Whichever way you decide to do it, be careful and ride safe!

I watched a family friend ride my Kawasaki Super Sherpa 6 years ago (250 dual sport), for the first time and get 100% score on his test. Didn't look so hard, as long as your comfortable on your bike. Also watched a raked out Indian with high bars fail the test, so it is what it is.

I start my msf class on august 14th. I'm looking forward to it. Though the permit has been good enough for me to get around the last four years or so.

Myself and Subytek took the MSF course to get a license. Best way to do it IMO. You pay $165 or so to take the class, gain some knowledge, and 95% guarantee a license test pass (unless you crash the bike).

You ride their bikes, so you don't have to worry about messing up yours (if you have one).

Out of all the people in our class that weekend, only 1 failed due to a crash during the test.

+1000 for the msf class. If you make it through that and still want to ride you should pass your test adn be good to go.

Also the msf teat is a little easier than the state's. In the last couple of years the state has added a figure 8 in a box to the requirements.

The test probably isn't hard but imo the class is valuable and one can pick up little things they may not otherwise have considered.

Like everyone else says, MSF class = the best. The day in the classroom is boring (lecture, video, written test), but that's only 4 hours. The rest you ride for 2 days which is fun.

the day i took the test 6 out of 11 people failed, all people on new bikes who claimed to be experienced riders.

I'd take the MSF course unless you are willing to have a permit for a season and get to know riding around. The nervousness people get with the test screwed them up, and every crotch rocket except one failed, but a 340lbs guy on a harley fatboy did it no problem.

One guy showed up w/ no helmet. Tester failed him on the spot, he just had to go home and try again in 2 weeks. Most of the crotch rocket guy's problem was they didnt have any experience riding at low speed and the test is on a small, low speed area, so they put their feet down to make the tighter turns.

The worst rider in our MSF course planted his foot 3 times in the figure eight and still passed.

And if you're looking for a clean 03 sv650, PM me.

MSF class is the way to go. From what I have gathered they can get you discounts on safety gear (helmet, leathers, ect...) after you finish.

Only if your insurance company gives the discount.

    Progressive no longer does...:emo:

Some dealers do give a discount to MSF Course riders. You have to have the card to show to them IIRC.
