Yep, that's what I've always done, I hate the whole sniping thing. I just think "if it sold for $X and I didn't get it, would I be upset?" then bid X... if that makes sense...

putting max bid doesnt work..people just narrow in on your max bid right at the end and beat it but 5 bucks

You are better off telling yourself what your max bid will be so you don't over shoot, then sniping the bids. By setting the max bid you are:

    1) Almost positively going to get outbid on the item.
    2) Likely to spend more than if you play the bidding game.

    indeed

I sniped my dad's DD......'94 legacy GT wagon, 5-speed, AWD, some front-end damage. $350. was supposed to be my EJ22 donor, until we got it home and realized how sweet it was. there was at least one other guy trying to bid on it last minute too....no way would I have gotten away with it for that cheap if I hadn't been sneaky

Yup, this site gives 3 free snipes.

    http://www.ezsniper.com/

Honestly, I hate 'abusing the system' too, since snipers have really ruined eBay. But, unless they add some kind of "add x minutes to auction after bid", it will always be this way. I have only used 2 snipes since I signed up for the site 18 months ago. Just when I really want to make sure I'm going to win something.

    What? No they don't.

The others bidders have no idea how much you bid until after they exceed it. And if they DO exceed it, you have no way of knowing how much they exceeded it by.

The winner of the auction is whoever bid the highest. They pay whatever the SECOND-highest bid was, plus $1 (* configurable by seller).

    Period.

They only thing sniping is good for is to win something (that you were going to win anyway) for less money, because noobs who don't know how proxy bidding works have less time to (pointlessly) try to INCREMENTALLY outbid you.

Exactly. If I am going to "snipe" an auction I'm going to enter with my max bid amount. That's usually the most effective way to land them. Otherwise if I don't have the time to babysit the auction and spam the F5 key I just set my max bid and let it go. If I miss by a buck or whatever that's the way it goes. For all you know the person who outbid you by that incremental amount may have put in an outrageously large proxy bid that you wouldn't have wanted to top anyway.
