So I've been driving my car for a good 3-4yrs now and I have never been pulled over for a loud exhaust. In the past weeks I've been pulled over for allegedly crossing a red light when it turned red while I was already in the intersection and then being told to not bull**** him if I did or didn't and accused of being a street racer/ in a gang. Today I got ticketed with a loud muffler and I asked him to check and see if it was too loud under our state law he says ok lets do it, jumps into his cars drives by me and waves good bye. I was like WTF? I'm still asking myself is this really were my tax money is going? I'm not saying all cops are idiots, but seriously when your gonna pull someone over do it because they have actually broken a law and don't just waste their time.

    Thanks for listening

Oh and btw he asked if my car was a honda, COP = FAIL

    In a gang? priceless.

He may have gotten a call (the 2nd cop) and had to go. But still weird. Do you know for sure if the decibal reading on the exhaust is within the legal limit?

He left without even testing just waved bye. He also asked if the cop that pulled me over for red light said anything about my exhaust I said no, then he said well theres a first time for everything.

i'm pretty sure mn has no actual dB limit - it's discretionary to the officer. kinda lame, I was pulled over maybe 5 years ago for loud exhaust

It seems to me that v8 guys get away with alot louder vehicles. I think the cops are discriminating or vehicular profiling the 4 cylinders.

That might be true because he wrote under style of car instead or compact/sedan/coupe he put import in capital letters and I got pulled over about 6-8 blocks from my house in St.Paul.

169.69 states that the exhaust must "blend the tone of the exhaust. There must be no crackling or popping."

That's it. No decibels, its completely discretionary.

Pretty sure that any type of modification of the exhaust is illegal, which pretty much makes 95% of car enthusiasts law breakers.

as far as I know, your exhaust must not be as overly loud with what's around you. I read something like that a while ago.

    SPT is nice and quiet.

    False.

It is illegal to modify any of the emissions control devices or replace with devices that are not certified for 50 state use under federal law, but it is fully legal to change anything you want from the cat-back. At that point, you only have to deal with any noise ordinances that may be in effect.

No, the law states that the sound of the exhaust must blend in with the overall sound of the motor, meaning any modified exhaust that is louder than stock is technically illegal in Minnesota.

Anyways, welcome the club. We get profiled since lots of retards have spoiled it for the rest of us. Get used to it. Try southern MN where Harleys and big trucks rule.

Personally I think the wording of our noise law in MN is a#$%^ng joke. If cops actually followed the law they should pull over 99% of every harley on the road. I hate the noise of those things and they can be heard like a mile away. I have never once seen them pulled over in the summer though.

I don't have the time to look it up right now, but I think individual cities can have ordinances with regards to mufflers on top of state law. I thought I read one, maybe mpls, that said you can't alter the exhaust to be louder or sound different than factory.

That's correct however each city and/or county can have their own law in that regard. The city of Stillwater comes to mind and their recent noise ordinance they passed a summer or two ago (too many hogs with straight pipes).

i think they do have a decibel limit, but its more how far away they can hear your car. I have been pulled over numerous times for it, and all they even say is "do you know how far away i could hear you?" but i always ask how come no harleys are ever pulled over for it?
Its more of stereotyping your car does it look like a "street racer"?

In WI the law is pretty well defined.

Any exhaust modified to be louder than factory is illegal. Of course the officer has to judge if he can say for certain that it is indeed louder than the OE exhaust. Its discretionary and of course biased.

Why would you pay the ticket if its not the correct vehicle description? Who knows if the plates matched the vehicle description the cop gave. I've been told by meter maids that if any of the information on the ticket is false it can be thrown out easy.

When i lived downtown minneapolis, I watched a meter maid gave me a ticket cause i was to close to a driveway. She wrote down that the car make was a Honda, even though my car was an Acura. I asked nicely, while flirting, if she would tear the ticket up if i moved my car. She already wrote out the ticket and said that she would get in trouble if she did. But asked if it was a honda, and i said no it was an acura. She told me to go down to the court house and it would be thrown out. I kindly thanked her and moved my car anyways, not to get towed.
