Hello everyone, I finally got approved for an account here and I'd thought I'd Introduce myself. All copied and pasted from my SL-I.net welcome thread. I have a build thread too, http://sl-i.net/FORUM/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=22620&start=0 This is my first car and I love it! I got it from my brother who is heading off to college, and whenever he did work on it, I helped. So far, all we have done is mostly repairs and maintenance (156k on the clock) but It drives perfect. We had to replace the clutch a couple weeks back, and we used an Excedy replacement and while we were at it, we replaced the oil separator plate. I'm planning on doing a few things to it, but not all that much. Full Exhaust (Gotta love not having a smog test), wheels, and a set of drop springs (and eventually I may do a Legacy GT strut swap for extra drop). On to the pictures: Trans out Cleaned out trans Obviously the old clutch on the right And to the dismay of my parents, when we did the clutch we left the exhaust on the porch Now to the bad. I have had an incredible stroke of bad luck over the past months. I had a deer jump into the side of the Outback, causing about $1800 in damage. Then, I had an awful misfiring issue that was finally resolved last month. And now, last night marks the worst night I've had in nearly 2 years. As i was driving down the highway after dropping my girlfriend off, my engine dies and I hear a change in noise. I pulled over, my car was smoking like crazy. I popped my hood, and I can see my rods. I somehow managed to blow a hole in my block.
Welcome and sorry to hear about the block... Is this a 3.0 or 2.5i? Sounds like time to drop a 2.5 turbo in.
It's a 2.5. I'm looking into what to do now. Possibly an N/A EJ257 setup until I can afford turbo parts. It sounds kinda dumb but has been done before.
I know there is some wiring that would have to be added when doing a turbo add... Also curly won't steer you wrong
Welcome to MnSubaru fellow Iowan! Sorry to hear about the block and deer issues. GL getting everything back together. A new 2.5 shortblock can be had up here for around $1700. Otherwise, a cheap damaged one with some hard work is about the only other option. Hopefully you can persuade your pops! Where in IA are you located?
Thanks, I'm in Sioux City. I'm looking into options, but I might have to do with a new motor if my father keeps being so stubborn.
Well...you're on the other side of the state! I am planning on heading down to my parents place on the 26th and thought that i'd offer to bring the shortblock down for you if you needed to pick one up. I'm pretty sure that i have all of the idler pulleys and whatnot that are super low miles and could offer you a really good deal on also. I think that all of the pulleys and whatnot are around $500. I could hook them up for alot cheaper than that for ya. How far from Mason City/Waterloo are you? My trip at the end of the month will be to Maquoketa which is about 30 minutes south of Dubuque.
About 4 hours, but I'll be up in Minnesota around then anyways. Also I would want to see the block in person first, but thanks for the offer. And do you know if all the EJ251 pulleys will work or not? Because the only thing I need is the shortblock.
If you just need the shortblock and are going to be in MN, call Morries Minnetonka Subaru at 95two-7nine7-one362 and ask them to give you a price on the EJ shortblock. Members of MnSubaru get a 20% discount.
Welcome +1 for Iowa! I went to school in Decorah and LOVED driving those country roads/through the bluffs in my subie! Good luck with the new project...
Thanks, although the roads around here kind of suck. It's looking more and more at EJ25D shortblocks now so I can just be done with it for cheap. Anyways, I snapped some pictures of my progress from yesterday and some shots of the carnage. I got the hood off, battery out, intake out, alternator removed, throttle body 90% off (damn vacuum hoses), and removed the absolutely destroyed alternator belt. It really was due for replacement a long time ago. Anyways, here's the shots: Progress Block bits fished out from the crankcase Block Hole
Thanks. Yeah, it's bad. Well it looks like I'm getting an EJ25D shortblock off of Rs25.com. Also got some more progress today, removed the A/C compressor and P/S pump.
Hi fellow SL-i guy! Yeah, I had to install a 25RS ej25d into my '98 GT, After I blew a headgasket and bent a rod. Good luck!
