I know this is totally off topic, but a family member is concerned here.

Anyone have any info on Scoliosis (not the Google type)? Any medical info, or personal experiences? Maybe a great doc you might recommend?

My sister had it when she was young. Hers was an advanced case and she ended up having her spine fused to prevent further crookedness. She had the surgery when she was about 13 and it pretty much stopped her from growing. She's about 5 feet tall.

The surgery was pretty intense (open back surgery can do that) and she had to wear a back brace for about 18 months afterwards.

However that was almost 20 years ago and she's fine now. Perhaps medical science has advanced in the treatment of recovery areas but as long as it's caught early it's fixable. Catch it too late and the curvature of the spine can do bad bad things to your other organs.

Thanks for the feedback! My family member keeps putting it off, going to the doctor, but MY patients are growing thin, and I am about ready to HAUL them to some back specialist.

One thing to keep in mind is it really depends on the severity of the curvature. For some people, it's really not a big deal. I have a slight curve and did chiropractic to help it when I was probably 14 or so. Now it's still curved, but it was never bad enough to require surgery, braces or anything. I will always have back problems and it puts a lot of pressure on other joints, but their isn't much I can do about it. As far as I remember, a family practitioner is the first step to determine severity and they can help find the best course of action. Good luck.

My cousin had this as well. She had a thankfully mild case and needed to wear a brace 23+ hours a day for over a year, then just at night for another year. They found hers early enough thankfully.

I heard about some kind of special oil treatment (not motor oil =P), that is supposed to help in some way. Any heard about this before, and if so, any truth to it? Or is it just a 'snake-oil' scam?

She has gone to the doctor/chiropractor who uses the Activator Methods, not a bone cracker, the curvature looks like it has lessened, even her co-workers say so. I don't know a specific degree yet. The Chiropractor is a nice person, and located near Uptown, 2101 Hennepin Ave South, Mpls 55405. Doctor of Chiropractic, Acupuncture Board Certified, and Internal Diagnosis Board Certified, he also went to St. Thomas? to be a clinical Doctor as well. <--- Big props to this individual for helping my sister :)

P.S. He is a Miata enthusiast, Zoom Zoom Zoom!

My sister had it while growing up. We didn't catch it until she was in HS. Due to my parents hard headed belief that if you're fine... no need to see a Doc once per year for physical check up.

My sister ended up going through a spine operation to correct the curve. She's now a few inch taller then I am... heck... all my siblings are taller then I am LMAO.
