if you are the one registering title or plates or what have you for a used car you just bought and the owner isn't there peering over your shoulder... just say you bought it for 1000 bux. Typically the old lady behind the counter doesn't know crap for crap about cars and wont even hassle you. Example:

I bought a Jeep from a guy for 4k. when I went to transfer the deed they asked me the sales price. I said, thousand bux and they bought it. don't tell anyone.

ahaha. that's awesome! I just gotta change office then. LOL. is it true then that if you declare less than 3,000 you don't pay sales tax?

No, you always pay sales tax. It isn't always the 6.5% though. They have a minimum of like $20 or so.

The next problem that you will run into is now almost all of the DMV's just use blue book value. Been there tried that. I was at the woodbury DMV and a dude bought a totaled out 03 chev PU for 1k, they made him pay sale tax on blue book value, and he even had the truck on the trailer in the parking lot. You might have a easier time trying to get it "gifted" to you.

I think you are right. look here http://www.dps.state.mn.us/DVS/Fees/fees_framehtm.htm

do you think if I say $1,000 it would be ok? about the gift, that needs to be co-signed and notarized.

Yeap, this works like 90% of the time, I've bought/sold 4 cars and have done this with all of em and it was never a problem.

ya this does work.... when I bought out of state and went into the DMV I gave her the honest price I paid and she put down 2,2xx for price. I hesitated, then told her to add one more digit.... shame on me....

Yes it does work... I've done it for years... but you have to be good at it, becuase if you just come up to the DMV person and say.. "I bought a 2004 Hummer for a 1000 bux" they would not buy it... so make it some reasonable!

    Good Luck!!!

If you want to register it in ND you can get away with saying whatever price you want to say.
