Definitely an interesting perspective. I have always seen the National debt as an issue, but never thought much into it. I agree (in a way) with DG in that the issue is not as clear cut as it may seem and that people who "play" the system or mooch benefits contribute a fair amount government spending. Although in all reality there is not much 1 person can do about this situation (T-Bills?).

on a VERY IMPORTANT side note lets try and keep political views out of this thread. Check the rules on it. We dont want anyone to get butt hurt or banned.

I am by NO means a liberal fan.. but the republicans spent spent spent under GW.... and I like Bush... so yes.. lets not get political on this...

they all suck at doing their job and enjoying spending our money... I vote we ALL stop payng taxes.. they cant throw every person in jail ;)

what can they do??? not much if Obama keeps the mindset that He WON deal with it and pushes it all through.. STOP SPENDING, I say pull troops out of countries that dont support us, watch their economies crumble so fast, stop sending aid to all these foreign countries and start with this one first!!

Intelligence is not your strength. I digress.

We are a debtor nation, period. Until people take personal accountability for their own balance sheets and cash flows the cycle will continue repeating every 5-7 years until a macro fiscal tsunami sweeps us all under.

Did you actually watch the movie? If you did, take note of when the debt actually rose. Then come back rant. Ignorance such as that is partially why we are in this mess. America as a whole cannot see past the end of their own driveway.

Also, the budget deficit in itself is only about 1/4 of the problem, as you would have learned if you payed attention.

When people like Alan Geenspan and the Secretary of the Treasury say there is a serious problem, we should probably take note.

Hrm, only took three posts to go off the deep end. DG, I'm guessing you haven't actually watched any of those movies, and are only reciting what you saw on Fox news?

Anyway; thanks Piddster, I hadn't seen this one. Sean (Soup) is right, America lacks personal responsibility right up to the top executives, until that changes, we're going to continue to have major issues.

Balancing the budget is one issue I believe is bi-partisan at heart, but is continuously not addressed by our major party politicians. Not really surprising, as not many people will get votes from the masses by telling them they are going to cut spending and continue to tax.

I whole heartedly agree. Balancing our budget and servicing our debt is not a problem with either party. America as a whole needs to wake up and take care of business. Just as the former Secretary of the Treasury said, "You have to service your debt."

This is also a matter of national security. Several other countries have a lot of leverage on us right now and I'm surprised they haven't used it. When we had leverage on the UK, we got them to pull out of the Suez Canal.

If you want to ballance your household budget you stop spending on items you don't absolutely need and you pay off debt.

This sounds easy the problem is this, if your income is so low that you can't service your debt. Just like your household the government is no different, without the taxes that businesses and individuals pay you loose the ability to pay off debt.

This is not a new problem, the USA has known that personal income would go down and social security would fall apart.

What can each of us do. Go earn money and take care of yourself and your family. DO NOT rely on the government to take care of you. I have worked my entire life with the understanding that its up to me to take care of myself and my family. I have made investments that will pay me back when I get old, I do not expect social security or the government to take care of me. I also drive cars with over 100k miles, I have a house that is 40 years old, and work my butt off 18-7, I do sleep a little.

No magic here the government must stop spending on social programs that do not add to the GDP. Individuals must stop bitching and start taking care of themselves and there family.

BE RESPONSIBLE for your life!!!!! DO NOT expect me to bail you out!!!!

In a LOOKING UP point of view -

We're still not as bad as we were at the end of WW2. SO, we can make it if we take action NOW.

I know this is nothing new. The difference here is that a lot of the debt is foreign owned, vs owned by our own citizens in ww2.

Yes, but debt is debt. I agree tho, if we don't change SOMETHING SOON, bad stuff is gonna happen. Japan IS our #1 lender, afterall. Especially since China has cut us off.

We might as well start to learn Japanese soon.
