Ok, so this is a project I have been getting seriously interested in for the last few months, and I am almost ready to start making it happen. Disclaimer: We live in S. Mpls on a small city lot. We do not have a lot of storage space (if we did, I'd still have the WRX along with the FXT!) and as of right now, I have lost the battle in the desire to purchase something like this: ...or this...(this not for space, but rather the budget) That has lead me to the desire to build something like this... I have seen many photos online, and I am beyond intrigued by the amount of creativity people have. I want to make this for a trip coming up in June to Missouri. (This will also serve as a distraction from my Ed. S. licensure presentation that I've been prepping for the last 3 years... ) Things I want to get out of this: Functionality Light weight Easy install/removal As much accessible storage as possible. As budget-friendly as possible If you'd be so inclined, I would love suggestions/advice on the following: Your experiences Types of wood/hardware that would be inexpensive, sturdy, and light Any structural hacks/design tips that you may have for such projects. I am no woodworking expert, but I have dabbled enough to have a rough idea in mind to mimic some of the examples I've seen so far. I hope to start the "blue print"/gathering materials in the next week or so. Thanks for any interest/suggestions! J
Have you seen Boone's? http://www.subaruforester.org/vbull...er-xt-touring-142177/index28.html#post6706922 There's a whole thread on the forum as well. I recommend cardboard (for a template) and a jigsaw. If you need a jigsaw, I bought the black and decker on Amazon because the price randomly dropped to $20. You're also welcome to borrow mine... I've yet to take it out of the box lol.
Thanks! I actually saw him post one of those photos on Instagram, and then had a short exchange with him through PMs. I had a rough outline of it from him, but did not see this. That is awesome! EDIT: Thank you also for the offer on the jig. I do have a couple all set to go. Good call on the cardboard template!
I've got a 4x8 utility trailer I bought because I was going to build one of these. http://www.instructables.com/id/Teardrop-Trailer/?ALLSTEPS http://m.northerntool.com/products/shop~tools~product_200612544_200612544?hotline=false I'm not going to build that trailer anymore and I'm trying to sell it, I'll even deliver to you. Ps the frame is built and ready to go on building the camper Edit, upon actually reading more of the thread I see you're looking for something else lol
Ah that's awesome! I totally want to build one now. I'll add it to my list of "awesome stuff that I want to build, but have no time for" and save it for retirement.
For a camper/sleeper build, you'll want to eventually look at battery, outlets, power inverter, lighting (and shades), and potential suspension (depending on how much weight you add) mods as well. You can get all sorts of ideas sifting through 4runner and Jeep forums.
I thought it would be an ideal setup for going to the track or to something like proving grounds, I had planned to make it capable of mounting wheels on the outside of it like the drag week cars do lol
I don't know if you'll be able to view this, but there's some good info in it http://forums.eurowerks.org/showthread.php?t=48125&highlight=camper guy built a teardrop trailer.
@derp That was an awesome read! Between the read @TMF sent me and this one, I just want to sell a kidney and build something like this now! I definitely don't have the knowledge or resources for the discounts that he had on that tear drop, but I think that those could be learned pieces quickly...
The sky's the limit! Just google overlanding and get a ton of awesome ideas! https://www.reddit.com/r/overlanding/comments/4zebzu/overland_kitchen_drawer_system_installed_on_my/
He did build the camper in his garage. I think the Book of Face has a pretty complete pictorial of his build. He is a character.
if you need cardboard i can hook you up with full 4x8 sheets pretty much as much as you want for nuthin
Warning: this forum can be dangerous for your financial security. Overland builds are a massive combination of awesome and expensive. http://forum.expeditionportal.com/threads/9034-Post-up-your-drawer-storage-system
Well, just spent almost 2 hours going through that thread and am only on page 70... Another awesome resource. Thanks @Chux !
Hmm...do you have these around regularly? I may take you up on these...we're building a WRL car and large sheets of cardboard come in handy for mocking up splitters, diffusers, etc.
