I was wondering if there would be any interest for the guys who came to the ice race, or who will be comeing next year to all pitch in around $20 each and we could buy an old beater to race next Winter. I could stud up the tires and we all could take turns beating on it. If you guys want to pitch in let me know and I will look for a car. Hopefully i can find an ok car for under $500

Rather than having the bonfire on the ice can we have the bonfire in, say, the car?

I would rather get a suby, but it might be hard to find one for under 500. it might be better for me just to buy a car and have people pay $5 for a couple runs. otherwise there might be some people that wont want to get out of the car to give other people a chance to run, just a thought

whatever works, it would just be nice to be able to push a bit harder and not worry about putting the damage on your own car.

I too was thinking about buying one, but making one would probably be cheaper! How hard can it be, it's just a hunk of metal?

Cool, yea the best idea would be to make one from a pattern. I'm sure you can get a deal from a metal place if you do a groupbuy.

my brother in laws family owns scott equipment.. they make industrial mixing machines... I have been thinking about hanging out with one of his cousins (my biking buddy) and making a template or something and getting it done in stainless...

they have plasma machines, even one of those laser cutters, rollers for making the mixing machine and bead blasting room, and powedr coating room.. mmmm fun times

What the hell would you need a plasma cutter for, this is aluminum. It's soft. And making it out of stainless would be extra weight. 14-12 gauge aluminum would serve the purpose nicely, would weight ALOT less, and would require a drop shear....something that is MUCH EASIER to make good straight cuts than a plasma torch. I could probably cut a straighter line with tin-snips. Hell, you wouldn't even need a drop shear if you had a jigsaw and some metal cutting blades. I worked in a metal shop, and what you saw in that link to rs25.com would require 6 cuts on a drop shear, if that, depending on if you started with a corner of the sheet. It would have taken me all of 2 minutes to cut that shape out. Then drill the holes and voila! a skidplate. Don't make this harder than it is.

Couldn't you also just use a grinder and a cutoff wheel? Not as quick as the drop shear, but probably more accessable to most people.

well, about the ice race car, we should find an old 'real-time 4WD' civic....and find a way to bypass the viscous couple in the driveshaft to make it true 4WD...

    I'll keep my eyes open

I have a convertable 91 dodge shadow turbo auto : ( that has a thrown rod that I would let go for really really cheap!!! you would have to haul it on a trailer I dont think it would make the 7-8 hour trip.
also have a 91 merc tracer LTZ 1.8 DOHC it has 220k on it but she is still runnin strong, I've been looking to get rid of both of them.

heres an option. my buddy has a car that he would be willing to part with, assuming he gets enough for it (in order to pay off what he has into it for new parts).

    93 Geo Metro
    5spd (brand new)
3 cyl NA engine (44hp, enough to peel out w/ 16x7" wheels)
    FWD
Gutted (2 ppl can lift and move the car)
Was* painted florescent red/orange w/ black undercoated flames. now its more of a peach color.
    striaght up performance exhuast.

    interest?

ya guys got all the wrong idea, HP is virtually nothin on the ice, it's all about traction!!

ya gotta find somethin that can drive the power (no matter how little) to all 4 wheels!

your car looks clean, but if we are going to use it on the ice i'm sure most would want awd.
