I was looking for this years IIRA ice racing schedule and happened upon this. You'll recognize Mark's red GC8 leading the pack and if you look closely you'll see Brent's Shadancer further back. Mid race you can see the Shadancer with its yellow Student Driver magnets on the back and sides. I'm happy to report that Carrie Carlson and I shared the Shadancer with Brent that weekend and did o.k. Unfortunately you also see pics at the end of Dave Kapaun and Mark fixing the radiator after my off. Have fun watching and come join us the winter! Amy
Freakin' awesome. I'll probably watch this a few more times just for the heart pounding close calls. That's just crazy, getting that close on a low traction surface. Excellent video!
Heck yes! lol I hope the race this weekend at garrison happens. You wouldn't have to worry about anything lol... you would be far in front of the pack by the first turn!
Traffic too once you start lapping people. Car to car contact seemed to be pretty light last year. The most wrinkled cars were definitely Mark's and Kevin/Brent's and those were from previous years.
So when are the events (link?), and who do I have to bribe to get a seat on the inside of one of the turns. It has been a long time since I was taking pictures of ice racing, and the last time it was dirt bikes and wheelers. Seriously. Russ
www.angelfire.com/mn/icerace The schedule is posted there. I dont think you would have to bribe anyone to get at the middle of a turn, just get permission from the right people, maybe lol the IIRA is a fairly laid back organization.
Yeah, I doubt you'd have any issues showing up and picking your spot. Notice how the video in the first post is taken via a hand-held cam by the passenger? In a car averaging 54mph and reaching nearly 70mph during a door-to-door race? That'd give the SCCA nightmares... IIRA is more uptight than the other ice racing associations I know of, but that's still pretty laid back. (There's one in WI that has a rule that says you can't have a beer in the car after the parade lap, but until then, it's all good  )
I invite any and all of you to come out and watch us run. I would also be very happy to offer advice and maybe even help you build your own IIRA race car. This is by far the cheapest (dollar/seat time) door to door racing I have found. Plus it is stupid fun. One warning, once you try it, it will be hard to stop.
Top Gear Ice Racing Here is 1991 Top Gear episode about ice racing that is excellent. They talk about left foot braking and show the tires close up. You will also see frequent use of the Scandanavian flick, as cars first turn one way inorder to go the other. Looks like the Europeans really dig ice racing too. Amy
Well, I know that Mark won't be at the race on Saturday, due to the SCCA awards banquet and RallyCross meeting (though maybe Dave and Jay will be there witht he car running the Sprints?). I would expect that Mark will be there on Sunday for the Enduro, but of course, all of this is speculation and Mark will have the real answer. For anyone who wants to be involved in the building og an ice racer, I have a deal for you :hsugh:
Our car will not be there on Saturday. If the race happens, we will be there Sunday. Check the website and/or call the hotline to see what the status of the race is on Friday afternoon. 612.330.0080
