So my 4 year tour in Los Angeles is over and I've moved back to MN. I need to get a new car, but I have no idea what to get. Currently I have a Tesla, but electric cars are not useful or all that great to have up here. It needs to have 4 doors, can't be boring to drive, and has to be a bigger size car. I thought of a Charger hellcat but the concern is Dodge quality, also thought of a F150 Raptor but I'm worried a big truck will become boring tho drive...
order a new 6mt cts-v wagon for winter and trade the tesla towards some baller hypercar for summer. Apparently those mt v wagons dont depreciate. Also, welcome back!
Preferences on sedan, wagon, suv, truck, or anything? Preference on American, Japanese, European, Korean, etc? Certain needs for features or capabilities? Budget? Tons of great options out there, but it would help to know what you're really after.
I can get a nicer winter beater, the summer car is what I don't know what to get. It needs 4 doors, fun to drive, and be bigger size. That's all that really matters.
Don't like the Tesla? Is it the limited range? Do they suffer battery issues from the cold weather? I was seriously contemplating one since I rarely ever drive more than 50 miles in a single day. Figured if I daily drive one, I'd practically be free from the pump except for road trips when I'd prefer a conventional car.
Well, since you're an OG I think that your first step should be to get a car that isn't a Subaru (and ask about it on the forum). I have a g35x, readymix has a 350z and an explorer So you have Tesla, that's a good start. Now add some stickers.
Good to have you back Chris! The new Raptor is no slouch, stock they're putting down 0-60 in 5.0. I'm guessing a reflash would do even better, but I'd wait another year or so. A friend of mine who owns an older one said they're having some issues with the new 10 speed auto. Another vote here for a CTS-V sedan. I sat in a couple over the weekend at the auto show and they're a damned nice car. If you want to go the German route, Audi RS7 or E63 AMG wagon.
Right...so I'm assuming you have a slightly higher budget based on recommendations thus far, and based on the Telsa. I've driven the CTS-V (supercharged version...back in 2012 or 2013) on the track, and it is indeed a beast. If the wagon is back, I'd definitely go for one of those (used ones are stupid expensive and hard to find). However, the Cadillac "CUE" system is kinda finicky, and the interiors are horribly plasticy. The best interiors that I've seen to date, are Mercedes. I've coincidentally also driven the C63 AMG, and CLS63 AMG on the track (this was back in 2012 I believe), and they are also a beast on track. It's not your fastest track weapon, but it doesn't sound like you'll be tracking the car anyway. The interiors and features on the other hand, are awesome. The MB E series wagon is awesome and has a ton of space...but they look precisely like a hearse. The new Alfa Romeo Guilia looks awesome and is getting solid reviews...definitely near the top of my "want" list, but they aren't that big. Should be bigger than a Challenger though. If you do settle for a 2 door, the best "bang for your buck" IMHO is the new BMW M2. Or if you can get over the blue oval and interior, the new Mustangs are solid as well. I won't dare mention a Subaru since you've already been down that path, but the car that I almost got instead of my FXT was an X5. Great interior, great engine (the N55 anyway), and they can tow 6,000 lbs. I probably would have gotten one, except all of the CPO'ed ones were pulled off the market (when I was in the market last year) due to the airbag recall. That, and I got a brand new FXT, with more features, for less than a CPO'ed X5. FWIW, I have been thoroughly enjoying the FXT. If you want a bit more excitement, there's the V8 option for the X5 or the X5M.
Thanks for the suggestions. CLS63 is what I almost bought before the Tesla, it's definitely in the top 3. So far I'm at Hellcat, CLS63, and M5 no Alfa for me.
Why in the sam hell would you get rid of that beautiful automobile? Bored with it?? Full chub every time that i see one. lol And those wheels look perfect on there! Varrstoens?
It's a great car, but it really is a California car. I don't think it would make a good winter car, the battery range takes a big hit when it's cold outside. But it's a great car, it really changes what car ownership is like, Tesla really showed the big manufacturers how outdated their cars were. They are Vossen 22s.
They look great! Well I thought that the Tesla would be the summer car, so cold shouldn't be an issue. I see them on the roads alot up here! Figured that they must be a really good car. For something different for you, my vote would also be CTS-V.
2013 Model S85 with Tech package It should finally be here today, the transport company took it's sweet time and I've been stuck in this tiny Hyundai.
You stole my next recommendation! But seriously, the RS7 or S7 would be a fine choice as well. I haven't driven either, but I have driven a friend's B8 S4 a few times, and they are awesome machines. The interiors are simple (besides the heated seats with 6 levels...seriously??), yet nice as well.
The RS7 is a phenomenal place to spend some time behind the wheel. Ridiculously fast, not the most agile machine but it'll do well enough on the street. Fast, stealthy and actually usable year round (with proper tires). The 6 level heated seats are an old feature on those cars, my '87 Audi 5000 had them. I'd recommend going with the heated/cooled option. The RS7 interior is more akin to a Space Shuttle, with the optional thermal imager perhaps an Apache gunship would be a better description. Definitely an executive express.
Other wise I would look into the 2018 dodge durango srt that will be available soon. It is awd and It is one i am getting for the wife.
Well I stand corrected...I guess I need to check out one of these RS7's myself! Do the lesser S7 and A7 have the same interior? I know, I should resort to the googles.
The RS7 and S7 have similar interiors, I don't have any seat time in an A7 to compare but I'm guessing not the same level. Chris, if you do go the RS7 route the Bang and Olfusen stereo is worth it just to watch the tweeters elevate out of the dash on startup.
I put this off long enough. Need to get it figured out before it gets cold. First decision was made, I'm keeping the Tesla but I'm going to store it for winter. I need to find a cheaper winter car, I've been looking at Fj Cruisers since the older ones can be had for pretty cheap, and I've always liked them. Should I consider an 04-05 STI or something like that? I don't want a truck a regular SUV, no 2WD cars. Want something fun to beat in the snow. Budget, say $15k
Been seeing alot of outback xt poping up recently on here and other places maybe try and snag one of them?
There’s a couple FJs at the the Lupient Bargain lot off 394 and Louisiana, haven’t checked the prices just saw them driving by. My buddy used to work there and has bought multiple vehicles from there if that carries any value. I have not bought a car there. Been happpy with ours so far. This year will be the first winter we’ve owned it.
