    IMMEDIATE STOP SALE ORDER
    ALL SUBARU DEALERS

We regret to inform you that we must place an immediate stop sale order on all of the 2008/2009 Subaru Impreza and Forester vehicles equipped with a 2.5L Turbo Engine produced with the beginning chassis number and later as shown below.
Model Starting Chassis Number Production Date
    Forester 701045 2008/01/08
    Impreza 523363 2008/01/08
    825183

The reason for this immediate Quality Assurance action is that there have been several reports of “Engine Knocking Noise†from other markets on vehicles produced after the production dates listed.

Initial investigation confirms an internal wear issue on the failed units.

In the interest of preventing any possibility of failures for our customers, we have chosen to isolate any potentially affected vehicles by ceasing sales of the potentially affected units until the root cause and correction can be identified.

All the other displacement engines and the 2.5L Natural Aspirated Engine are excluded from this action.

Your region/distributor will be contacting you with a detailed list of affected vehicles assigned to your dealership. However, dealer trades cannot be tracked so please be aware of the affected VIN range.

If you have a vehicle in inventory that falls into the affected vehicle range, please ensure that your sales and service staff are immediately notified that the unit is un-saleable until further notice from SOA or your region/distributor.

If any of those vehicles has an unusual engine noise, please notify the SOA Technical Helpline immediately with all of the details and submit an E-QMR.

Should a customer bring an affected vehicle into your service department for an unusual engine noise, please immediately arrange that they are given the use of a clean SSLP vehicle and notify the Technical Helpline and submit an E-QMR.

You will be contacted shortly thereafter on how to proceed.

We are still investigating whether any of the SIA produced Legacy Outback turbo vehicles are affected. If any action is needed on the SIA vehicles, you will be notified early next week.

Anyone know how many cars this applies to?

EDIT: Hrm, it looks like this only applies to all cars manufactured after 1/08/08. Found more details

Wow this is gonna suck for subaru, Since they wanted to change their look to attract other buyers. Lets see if these other buyers come back or now even buy in the future. Should have just stayed with what worked.

I read on the WRX at the auto show that since 1994 more than 90% of the Subaru's made are still on the road today.

*Edit* Why the change to make them more appealing to the masses? I prefer if not everyone has the same car as me!

Because Subaru is a corporation that does what it does to make money, not to pander to some guy that wants a unique car. Want a unique car, build one yourself. Like all car companies, Subaru wants to sell cars. And if making the car appealing to a larger demographic sells more cars, then they'd be stupid to not do so.

Turbo motors only, and only production for roughly 3 months. It isn't affecting a huge number of people, at least. The "average joe" probably isn't a forum hound and probably doesn't buy a turbo anyway so it won't have a significant dent in sales unless this gets a lot of publicity. It'll get some, as word spreads to other forums (the Evo guys will eat this up, I'm sure) but unless it makes it into a mainstream website or publication, it won't go far beyond the automotive forums.

Just my opinion. Sucks if you bought one but I bet the numbers aren't particularly large. Probably affects, what, 2% (my guess) of the Subarus made in that period? 200k annual sales, 50k per quarter, 2% of that is 1,000 cars. And it doesn't say anything about the Legacy/Outback so the number is probably less than that even since that platform accounts for something like 35-40% of sales.

it's not like they take your car away from you, you just are instructed to bring it in for a new motor.... and who doesn't like a new motor for free?

driving back to the dealership to get my free mill would be a FUN FUN day :)
