Sorry for the last minute thread, the class is this Sunday at noon.

In this class I will cover a bit more than Maintenance 101. This class is for those who want to do a little bit more than changing their own oil. As always, the class is free, but you're on your own for food.

Where: The location is Bloomington, MN. Please PM me for the address/directions.
When: Sunday February 7, 2010, Noon, sharp!
What: Maintenance 102, please see further description below
Why: To educate Subaru enthusiasts on how to maintain their Impreza
Who: Anyone is welcome, please notify me that you will be attending. Maximum 10 people.

Please arrive on time so that you won't miss any pertinent information, I can not wait for people to show up to start the class.

    What will be covered:
Basically everything you would find in the 60k mile maintenance schedule plus some extra stuff, time permitting. This includes, but not limited to:
    • Changing oil + oil filter
    • Changing transmission fluid + rear differential fluid
    • Changing coolant
    • Changing air filter
    • Changing spark plugs
    • Changing brake fluid
    • Changing clutch fluid
    • Inspecting wheel bearings, brake pads + rotors, brake lines
    • Inspecting axle boots, ball joints, tires, belts
    • Performing an engine compression test
    • How to properly torque your wheel lugs
    • Installing an engine block heater

    What to expect:
Chairs are limited, so please bring something to sit on. The class will be at least 4 hours long, but it is not a lecture by any means. You are free to leave at anytime. We will have a car that needs the 60k service and I will demonstrate how to perform the service, including what to look for maintenance wise and diagnosing any immediate problems found on the car. The class is held in a garage with little heat, so please dress accordingly. The class is interactive and open for any questions.

Please bring money to chip in for pizza or something!

    ~Dan

    Haha, I'll PM you.
As long as I am around and have donor cars, this will be an ongoing event. Maintenance 101, Clutch day, etc, whatever comes my way. We should do your clutch when it comes time!

According to Subaru, 60,000mi maintenance means the following fluid/parts:

    Engine Oil - $25
    Oil Filter -$5
    Coolant - $15
    Air Filter - $25
    Brake Fluid - $5
Spark Plugs and Wires - $80

This is all of the required items for a total of ~$160. I also did F&R Differential fluids for an additional $20 and Trans Fluid/Filter for $70. Plus they recommend checking belts, brakes, hoses, lines, bearings, etc... I would plan on $200 or more depending on the quality of fluid you use...

I would say plan on $200-250 depending on the quality fluids that you use

+1 for the turbo_turtle. Great guy. I was there to learn a bit, and he did a great job explaining his way through everything. Would trust him with my car if needed.

believe me. Heavy hauler didn't use no wimpy fluids. I'm sure landed over the top side of that range.

had a great time at Dan's (turbo_turtle) he certainly walked us though everything really well and i learned a ton and look forward to meeting with him again to do a few of my fluids. I would recommend everyone who's just into surbarus to start with learning everything he covered, nothing we did was really all that difficult but did require some unique tools (powerstearing) ext, i look forward to being around for a third level course with him and i hope these mini meets continue to happen, they certainly better the club and my understanding of cars :woot:

$225.00 for the 60K plus a little green for the turbo_turtle for the great help.. if you need any help or have any questions, give him a pm. he is very flexible with work right now. he would be more then happy to help you or do the work for you.
so less then half of what the dealer gets.
dealer quoted me $850 plus shop supplies.

    we also did a compression check #1 146psi #2 146psi #3 142psi #4 142 psi witch seems to be in spec.

Thank you Steve, Doug and Jeremy for the wonderful comments. I'm glad that everyone enjoyed the class and that everyone learned a little something. It was satisfying to be your teacher. :)

Compression specs for the 2.5L WRX are: 142-171 psi with a difference between cylinders less than 7 psi. So you are well within specification.

again i'm glad i attended, but next time i have the chance i'd like to test my compression as well. im guessing the specs for an RS are higher then an wrx? i reason this seeing how i believe my car has a 10 to 1 compression, and would think that the turbo would have a lower ratio.

Yup. Non-turbo motors should be around 148-185 psi.

No immediate plans for the next "Maintenance 102". I'll need another donor car with 60k miles.

But I am teaching the next class, which is just changing transmission and rear differential fluid. The thread is located here: http://mnsubaru.com/forums/showthread.php/39044-30K-Fluids-on-my-09-WRX-Tuesday-6.29

Class is next Tuesday and anyone that is interested in learning the process and/or having any questions about the subject is welcome to join.

    ~Dan
