Mine are going bad. The car pulls sometime to the right sometime to the left and i get a cluck when turning the steering wheel quickly side to side. I am just wondering how hard is it to replace them and does anyone make aftermarket ones with or without possability for spacers. How much are the stock ones? Thanks, Taras
it really looks like an inner tie rod. Nathan looked at it and said its most likely the tie rod. The cluck comes from the middle of the rack and there is a pretty big play in the rod. What the ball joint?
we'd have to get the car off the ground to check the ball joints.... Fobia... when he turns the s/w side to side quickly you can hear the clunking when the car is stationary.... ball joint isnt gonna make too much noise if it isn't going up and down (bouncing) or at least very minimal noise... this is a definite clunking... when you grab the inner tie rods and pull down on it the noise and clunking goes away... fairly definitive answer... my only thought now is Taras has since said it does it both sides so, would have to do some further investigation to make sure the rack is good... can't see why it would be bad...
i had the same noise when the nut on my ball joint stripped. also dident know you guy put it up on a lift and looked at it.
it helps... you dont need too... you can jack it up so the weight is off the wheels... but usually the control arm has to be supported so its like its on the ground but its not so you can prybar the wheel and watch the ball joint... depends on the vehicles...
how much the the oem tie rod? Btw, Matt told me today that I dont have inner tie rods and I all have to take off the rack to replace whatever is clunking there.
hmmmm.... I was looking at the diagrams.... it was for after taking out the rack... but it didnt look like it was a 10hr project... lets aim to get it down to the shop on saturday and we can go from there... get the inner tie rods... worse case is you get here and we look at it and find something else... parking lot diagnostics is only so good especially when its 40F out.... maybe swing down thurs or fri night after 5pm... then we can look at it and see hwat it may be for sure... then buy parts etc and fix on saturday?!?!?!?
besides it calls for 1.4 hrs to replace both inner tie rods man.... the rack isnt gonna be an hour job, so I am pretty sure we can do it without removing the rack...

I amnot convinced... but if it was Bikerboy that told you then I would say I could be very wrong... CAUTION: Secure the gearbox in a vice using the ST as shown. Do not attempt to secure it without this ST. Remove the tie-rod end plate. Remove the tie-rod end and lock nut from the gearbox. Remove the small clip from the boot using pliers and move the boot to the tie-rod end side. Using standard screwdriver, remove the band from the boot. Extend the rack approximately 40 mm (1.57 inch) out. Unlock the lock wire at lock washer on each side of tie-rod end using a standard screwdriver. CAUTION: Be careful not to scratch rack surface as oil leaks may result. Using ST, loosen the lock nut. ST 926230000 SPANNER Tighten the adjusting screw until it no longer tightens. Using a wrench [32 mm (1.26 inch) width across flats] or adjustable wrench, remove the tie-rod. Ok so maybe we better plan for a long late night saturday we may be removing the rack after all!!! ha ha....
Well, i does not look so bad. I will swing by the dealership and ask them what they do to replace the inners and how much they charge for it. If they say it will cost $500+ then we know its going to take a long time.
Nathan you are quick with replies;-). Yeah thanks man, i dont want to go to a dealer cause i know it will cast **** load and i will not learn crap sitting i a lobby waiting for it to be done.
I think you got the conversations a little off. You said you were going to get an inner tie rod end I said they dont make one, you have to buy the whole thing.
i can give you a price tomorrow, and yes there is no inner tie rod END, but there is an inner tie rod.
so Matt is hte subaru stuff different... you can buy them seperate for other vehicles... do you mean you have to replace the whole steering rack??? I am looking at the diagrams and it looks like the rack may have to come out, but it also shows they are removable and replaceable???? I have NEVER done them on a subaru... so I aint preaching like I know.. have done a few on other vehicles, trucks etc...
they do make an INNER tie rod, you dont have to get the rack for it, i will see if i can upload a pic tomorrow
ok... so I re-read over everyones posts.. yes its not an inner tie rod END... just an inner tie rod.. correct??? thats where I got confused in this thread.. I'm like.. hell this picture shows the inner tie rod.. what the heck.. ha ha
Ok, i see it now too. What is a ball joint then? Nathan can you upload a pic of that too. BTW, i bought a CD from ebay yesterday with all the diagrams.
the thing between the arrow and the tool underneath... it basically holds the hub/wheel/brakes/strut to the control arm and allows it to turn as well...
by the way its WE ah ha ha ha ha ha... If I didn't know you I would say you were being an ass to me.. ha ha Well I was like 110% convinced that the INNER TIE ROD was replaceable.... but I missed the 'END' in the posts... ha ha ha I didn't want to start arguing about it.... but yeah we were all saying the same thing... so Matt does the rack come out for this... I have done others that stated the racks need to be removed but we did them in the car??? just wanna make sure I know how much time I am gonna be working on it...
thanks.. I was like 99% sure I could get it done in the car... but hey never doen the subaru before and when you read through the professional help programs they say after removing the rack... phew....
just called BP and they told me it will 600 bucks to replace the inner tie rods and they said that it calls for removing the rack. So it it really that nessesary to remove it?
Taras.. trust ME... I will look after you... I aint out to make $$$$ of you.... ask anyone who has dealt with me... I am more then fair on the pricing.. and always back up what I do... the dealership may have different guidelines to follow... so they go buy set pricing so I am seeing even with a Ford dealership... Tires Plus.. well there's your first problem... (which one??) Tires Plus will realise afterwards oh you need this and this, and seeing as we already have it apart in our shop you wont say NO...
make $$$ of you??? sounds like a bad bar joke... A russian walks into a mechanics shop and turns into money. Just kidding. You are one helpful honest guy. (disclaimer: not been proven by the fda, nasa or nambla.)
omg, his is great. I know Natha that you know what you are doing. If you can help me you are the first person I will go to. I am not going to the dealer or a chopshop. Just gethering info here and there. I ordered both left and right tie rods so get ready for a long night of wrenching
