I'm still on my parents' car insurance policy because just paying them the extra to add my car is "cheaper" than getting my own policy. well, now I'm 23, and haven't had a ticket in 4 years. I've been doing some looking around, and that's just not true anymore. So I think it's time I get my own. What companies to you guys use? what do you think of them? how are they in an accident situation?
stae farm if you have a lot of stuff to insure, their bundle discounts are the best. otherwise progressive
Progressive made dealing with my accident last spring very hassle free. I was expecting much worse and was very pleasantly surprised at how easy they were to work with. They've also been the cheapest for me throughout most of my life. I was laughed out of a State Farm office once when inquiring about having them insure me.
Agreed. I've been very happy with Progressive -- no accidents, but have had 2 comp. claims that were paid out very quickly and at a fair value (1 was a total loss on my GSR when it was stolen). Even if I did find a company that was a bit cheaper, I'd still stick with Progressive simply because they have been sooooo easy to work with when I needed them.
Yeah, I've had one real claim with Geico (hail damage), and that was very hassle free. They've also been very easy to deal with regarding windshield damage (they do free repair, or you can pay for unlimited replacement plan).
Just don't extend that concept to e-surance. They wanted like 2-3x as much as my Farmer's policy. Having an agent that is actually looking out for you is a huge plus too. Ours is a childhood friend of my wife's family, and goes the extra mile to get us into the discounts, etc.
I got in an accident 4 years ago, had to fight for my life to get monies from the other parties insurence.... they had Ill. Farmers insurence. I was dealing with them and talked with the other parties agent, and after I saw how they stood up for thier customers, I went straight to them, and I'm very happy! 06 wrx full coverage $106.00 per month....
Another happy Farmer's customer here. It's a large enough company with enough staffing and financial backing to expedite any claims we've had. On the flipside, my current agent (actually, his assistant) is very helpful and tolerates my stupid and redundant questions. He was referred to me by my family's long-time agent, so I'll echo Vector's thoughts on finding a good agent.
I say +1 to Geico as well, they are by far the cheapest I have found @ 120/mo full coverage on an 03' WRX. Mind you I am 22, and live in the cities, so this was by far the cheapest full coverage insurance I found. Hopefully that'll drop soon, but the agent I spoke with over the phone stated that "It will likely not decrease by much until you are older than 25."
yea, I will definitely be seeking a local agent, but with a larger company. my parents agent has been a huge help in answering questions/switching coverage (we never have more cars insured than we are driving....so if my dad or I switch cars, we have to give 'em a call). I'd go with him if I were in the cities...but. we've also had zero claims in the last 6 years....so I know nothing about what either of the companies we've used are like in that situation. Thanks for the info so far....keep em coming!
I have Geico and am happy with them. I would not reccomend American family. I had to fight with them for 3 years for a accident that they didn't want to pay up for.
Had farmers for ever (I am old). Family has been with them since about 67-68. Had one claim with them and everything worked out great. Then I bought a house. Needless to say, I am now with state farm and I save about 1200 a year between the car, truck and house over farmers. Truck is $220 every 6 months full coverage car is $320 every 6 months full coverage No idea what my house is Russ
I just added the 2007 forester and progressive was $340 for 6 months, sti is $300. I have 6 cars insured thru them so that probably helps lower it.
i have american family, by far the cheapest we found, saved us over 500 bucks a year, no accidents, a couple tickets, 5 vehicles
Fireman's fund. Don't know if they cover MN registered cars though. New OEM parts, agreed value policy, very generious rental coverage, etc. Very reasonable once you compare features, but I don't think they do much in the way of minimal coverage (by brother covers his Z under pretty minimumal coverage with them but its more like an addition to the policy on his primary coverage). Added bonus of not being a pain in the ass when you get in an accident. Pro-tips: Don't skimp on medical coverage. Your health insurance probably doesn't cover the excess. This **** costs a fortune too. If you have anything of value get an umbrella policy. A million dollars umbrella is reasonably affordable. This coivers you if the damages you cause are worse than your main policy covers. Get an insurance agent -- an independent one (sells multiple brands). Insurance companies can be a notorious pain in the ass to work with and they help fight through the bull****. They'll also help you taylor coverage. They can cost more on the face, but they may save you money by making sure you have the right amount of coverage. they are also useful if you have an accident as they work for you, not the insurance company. Insurance lawyers agree: They wouldn't insure a pile of dog**** with GIECO. AIG is a safe choice, really. (Only the parent is in trouble, the divisions are healthy)
We got State Farm on two of our vehicles and AAA on the other three. State Farm is pretty strict but AAA is pretty laid back. I got $400/ 6months for full coverage on my 99 Acura RL. Pretty good I think.
Friends of mine in the autobody industry say that Progressive is the absolute worst company to deal with.
more awesome info here! another concern that just occurred to me, is my loyale. obviously, a touch higher value than your average loyale with 200k on the clock. is this just a matter of getting it valued? I assume different companies will handle modifications differently....
