CAR: 1996 EJ20G SWAPPED 98RS Mods: EPROM Rob Tune, Apexi short ram, boost control set to 16 psi, turboback exhaust, Tial 38mm WG (With upgraded 1.1 bar spring), Invidia Uppipe (Modified for External Wastegate), but still running a stock slanty intercooler. the intercooler functions, but it is not stellar and I worry about heat while sitting in traffic. I know the front mount is an option as well as finding a jdm sti slanty($$$), but if I could, I would prefer to keep a top mount (preferably USDM) but make it more efficient. I have heard that some legacy and rally cross guys have figured out a setup to use a wrx intercooler without switching around intake manifolds and was wondering if any of those guys could help me out or tell me that front mount/JDM STI slanty are really my only option. My main goal is prolonging the life of my setup rather than making any more power.
Yes I have, but I was wondering if people have had any luck with other options. It looks like the sprayer helps, but this is the worst intercooler ever made, the intercooler feed pipe is made of plastic and often breaks. While mine is functional, I would like to replace it with something better. If no options present themselves a sprayer may be the ticket.
Crazy and true story, the USDM WRX intercooler has a plastic Y pipe..... At stock boost levals you are really just pissing into wind. THE BEST intercooler for the GC that you will find will be meant for a turbo 2.5 RS. (Like I'm running)
Stock boost levels according to my dinking around on nasioc and rs25 are around 12 psi and I am just shy of 17psi. I did not fully elaborate, and that is my fault so bear with me... I am not trying to douse myself in urine here, I am really just trying to find a suitable replacement for the future as this engine is 15 years old and from japan. If you don't mind me asking, what is your setup? I have been trying to find out what other people have been doing, but in all the threads I have read in other forums it just turns into debate on whether or not front mounts are cool. I really couldn't care less about having a piece of bling, I am just trying to ensure that I have taken necessary precautions and such. So the point of this is longwinded affair is me asking you if you would please elaborate on your setup/help me out (I am fairly new to obd1 cars coming from an 07 wrx to this) Thanks
I'm running a boosted 1996 2.2 L, (with a custom 60 trim rotated mount turbo) but my intake manifold isnt exactly like yours, but is the same basic shape, the intercooler runs fairly close to the firewall, but doesnt quite hit. I WAS running a forester XT top mount for a while, it seemed to work OK, and fitment was fantastic!
I read that forester XT top mounts fit, but was unsure if there was a specific set of years or if any will do. I also heard legacy gt top mounts fit, but the info is scarce. The last thing I want to do is cram something that doesn't fit in my engine bay, I saw pictures of people putting bugeye intercoolers on the ej20g and they were all pretty ghetto looking. I had just heard from talking to some people around here that some local guys were running alternate top mounts with success and if that was true I wanted to get on that bandwagon. Thanks for the info.
The LGT definatly will NOT work, its basicly a small top-front mount style intercooler, as the TB is UNDER the intake on the LGT. All 04-08 fxt top mounts should work, but not 09+ .
I was running it for about 3 years and pretty much all the fins were ****ed, and I got this bigger (2.5 rs kit style) aluminum one for free and got bored one day and threw it on. But if the fxt one was good enough to cool the intake charge on my no-management, 220K mile completely stock long block n/a 2.2, it should work great on your setup!
This is Yia's old EJ22T swap wagon with the USDM intercooler. This picture is for reference only. I believe Fuji and Yia did a custom pipe to connect to the intake manifold and cut part of the intercooler elbow to fit it. Because on the Wrx Y-pipe it curves. If you have any questions you should PM Fuji K. Yia's old OBS wagon with EJ22T swap Cut Y-pipe
