I have a Linksys wireless G adapter and its running off of our router one level up. I was told by the cable company that our speed loading pages and downloading wouldnt be affect but its almost impossible to DL a 30 sec clip, or load a webpage does anyone know how to fix this? the more cost affective the better
first concern: what is your signal strength? my second concern is: is your wireless connection secure? does it have WEP enabled? The reason why i ask is because if its not secured, anyone with a wireless adapter around your house/apt/townhome whatever can use YOUR wireless connection to connect to the net.
do you have the bypass proxy server enabled? click "tools", "internet options...", "connections" tab, "LAN settings..." and check the "use a proxy server for your LAN" box, then check the "bypass proxy server for local address" box, and then uncheck the "use a proxy server for your LAN"... if that doesn't work, then ask someone with more brain.
You can log into your router and look at the dhcp routing tables to see if there any other computers that have been using your network. If they have, then they would have been assigned an IP address. Signal strength as mentioned by Hallywood is another good possibility
I used to have a network sniffer program where you would give it an ip address of one of the computers on the wireless network, and it would reconstruct the webpages being visited right on your desktop. I wish I knew where I got it so I can reload that sucker.
lock your router down...I had some jackwit in a Sears Appliance Repair truck surfing the internet on my wireless just days after I installed it in the house. I hadn't bothered to setup security at that point...but I quickly did.
i came upstairs and checked our other connection and its running at 60 mbps and mine reads as low as 2.... 24 is the high
If you've got the WRT54G, WRT54GL, or WRT54GS, A group called Sveasoft makes an aftermarket firmware for the router. It will allow you to do a whole crap ton of things that are built into the hardware, just turned off in software. Namely adjust the unit's broadcast power. It comes with a stock setting of 28mw, but you can set it as high as 251mw with the firmware installed. This will only work on a Version 4, not a version 5 router. Check out their website in the forums for info on their firmware. I've been using their Alchemy firmware for well over a year now, and had no problems with it. I do believe that they're workin on, or it may be out already, a new one called Talisman Website is here: http://www.sveasoft.com/
Try switching the channel your router operates on. It should be pretty simple. You should be able to find the setting in the router setup screen (the same place you would go to enable WEP security). I was having trouble with the signal in my apartment so i switched from the default channel 6 to something else (9 I think) and went from low/very low signal strength to excellent. You may have to try a few different channels before you find the best one. Several of the channels were worse than the default for me. -E
Do you have the same problem with the one you are running upstairs? If not, then it's probably the 2 mbps speed. To verify, move your computer into the same room as the router, check speed (it should be up there now), and see if the problem persists.
Also, the default firmware that shipped with some of the WRT54* models had problems with frequent disconnects, especially when downloading large files. Checking the linksys support page for a firmware update might be a good idea. It fixed the problem on my WRT54G.
