Well, the new iphone is not 4g, it is still 3g, but it can use the faster 3g network if att ever rolls it out. While the evo 4g might be the new hotness, do your research. Most people are only getting 12 hours of standby time, and we don't have 4g in the cities. That will come sometime next year, but you still have to pay the $10 a month premium for 4g service. For me, jumping ship from the iphone to the nexus 1 was probably the best decision ever. I like to tinker with stuff, and being locked down to what Steve Jobs wants isn't fun anymore. I will give Apple some high marks for the new phone. It is a damn fine piece of hardware, but you are stuck with apple and itunes. My n1 was up and running less than 10 minutes after I open the box. Didn't need to plug it into a computer, didn't need to bring it anywhere, just plug the sim card in and i was running on 3g (and way faster than my iphone 3g). I say you pick a carrier you can live with, then pick a phone that works for what you want. No way in hell I would ever have sprint. Nothing but problems with them. But then I am with att and don't have any issues. So people can't stand att. Russ
I am currently with ATT at the moment with 2 iphones. If I switch over to sprint, I'll be able to save about 50 bucks monthly over ATT since I get a good discount from Sprint... Hmmm ATT is not a bad provider but, i think i'm paying a bit too much; 200 monthly for 2 iphones (wtf) compared to 150 for 5 lines with Tmobile that i use to have.
I was playing with the EVO last weekend and I was impressed. The thing that got to me was that, damn this thing is a bit big compared to my iphone.
ATT's new tiered data pricing looks pretty nice to me. In 12 months, I have used 1.3 GB of data on my iphone 3gs (over the cell network not including wifi), so I am going to the $15/month for 200 MB plan since I spend most of my time at home/work where I have wifi anyways. I still agree that ATT is expensive, but this should take a little sting out of it. For the phones, I like the EVO, its a bit large but that huge screen is really nice looking. Personally, I am under contract with ATT for another year and my wife is getting the new iphone so thats 2 more years.... So I am planning on selling my 3GS (they sell for 300+ in good shape used) and getting the new iphone for $200, as they moved up my upgrade date. I wish ATT would end the exclusive contract if only to allow ATT customer the option of having android phones.
If you want to ever tinker with anything, ever.... Android is your best bet. If you want a phone that works really well for what it is intended to and works with all the ipod accessories under the sun, then the iphone might be worth looking at.
If you want a android phone on att, just get the nexus one. They have a att version that works just fine (I have had mine for a month). I sold my 3g for $320 and a broken 2g for $100 and picked up the N1. Will probably never go back to a iphone again. Russ
so far i like my evo 4g....so far its one of my best HTC i have owned....i tethering on this phone through pc and i can not tell you how fast it is to surf around...
I can't wait till I am able to upgrade phones... I was playing with shibbs's evo and I really liked it. wanna do some more research and stuff but I have been happy with spritn. 3 lines 1500 anyime min unlimited data/text/ pic mail and all that crap for 138 a month...
Don't think I will jump on the new iPhone but at $200 it's tempting I love my iPhone but I also haven't played around with any of the phones you guys talk about... I may just update to a 3gs for a faster phone for now but meh.. My phone works, I have it jail broken an running the stuff I like and use so why change just to flash it around... Not to mention the new one won't fit in my otterbox case unless hey release the old design in the new one like they hinted at
Both companies have Pros & Cons...so it all comes down to personal preferance.... check this link out ...more opnions at the bottom of the story. Kinda like a Kobi and Shaq fight. http://www.appolicious.com/tech/articles/2066-top-android-phones-shouldn-t-be-wary-of-new-iphone-4
I love my evo. Really. I don't know what russ is talking about with the 12 hours of standby time... as long as the wireless and gps is off, this battery lasts a very long time. plus the camera is sweet. Very sweet. I use mine constantly (what do you expect, its new!!) and the battery is now going on hour 17.
I had two people show me their evos and they both turned off wifi when they realized they had left it on "accidentally". Wifi is something I use all the time, and my understanding was that data transmission took less power over wifi than over 3g cell networks (in general, not EVO specific). Is there something on the EVO's wifi that chews up more power?
I am guessing it only chews up more power if it is constantly searching for a wifi network, if connected I would think battery consumption would slow down.
All you need is an unlocked phone on AT&T frequencies... I used to have a Nokia that I bought in Thailand.
You'll need to be a bit of a power user and manage your battery a little bit, from what I've read. No big deal, those of us that are technically-minded realize those things use power. Turn off bluetooth, 4g, and data roam searching, and from what I've heard it won't have a problem making it 2 days with normal usage. Wifi is not much of a power hog in comparison to cell tech, as it should sleep the radio when you're not requesting data.
Got to play with an evo today and really really want one. My G1 is a huge under-performer in comparison. The touch keyboard wasn't as bad as I expected, but the home key buttons seemed too sensitive... I can get used to that tho. It felt a lot smaller than it looks and it has a good weight to it (doesn't feel fragile). Also heard a rumor about 4g coverage in the twin cities as early as this August. Lines up perfectly with the end of my tmo contract.
got the htc evo yesterday.... the phone is pretty nice and new coming from the iphone. the only thing that i dislike is the battery life..
How do you handle your multimedia syncing (audio, video, podcasts, audio books, etc)? I see there's an Amazon MP3 store app for music but can you purchase movies, tv shows, audio books, etc as well? How do you like the polish and over all feel of iPhone OS (now iOS) compared to Android? I played with the Evo a bit yesterday and found the keyboard to be lacking compared to the iPhone and the text select function to be horrible (like the magnifying glass in iPhone). I do like were Android is headed but I'm just not sure of it's up to what I'd use it for quite yet.
Well, I use my phone as a phone, not a ipod, so the music sync and stuff I really haven't messed with much. I have been messing around with listen and I think once google gets that rolling, that will be the way to go. I also picked up double twist and that looks ok, I just have really dug into yet since that is not the main purpose of my phone. As for Android, I think the biggest thing is there are SOOOOO many options for everything. It is like have a jailbroken iphone times two. The iphone locks you into everything. Which if you are not a person that like to tinker is ok. Soccer moms will hate Andriod. The apps are pretty good. Some of them just smoke the iphone version, but then there are a bunch that are fragmented. It is kinda like the iphone when the itunes app store first started up. I will give ya the keyboard part. It kinda sucks compared to the iphone keyboard, but after talking to a couple of apple fan boys I now understand why the apple keyboard works so much better. I guess with the froyo update they did some pretty big updates to the keyboard, so I will have to see how that works. I will live with some of the growing pains of android for some of the features that will never be on iphones. Google voice is pretty damn nice with android. No work around through web pages to make calls like on the iphone, it just makes calls from GV. Certain apps make up for the lacking in others. Russ
The keyboard on the Evo/Incredible and the N1 are different. HTC put there own keyboard in to replace the Andoid version, and I like the HTC much, much better. I dont know why some people complain about it, it works pretty flawless for me. I think its just getting use to something different if you ask me.
ok so before i moved to minnesota i worked for ATT in nevada. the iphone wasnt/isnt so hot when it comes to coverage...the iphone lost coverage pretty easily...dont get me wrong the iphone is a nice phone...as far as the evo goes, i havent gotten to tinker with it yet...but im extremely happy with the HTC HD2 that tmo has to offer...ive had this phone for about 2 months now and im still learning how to use it, and as far as when messaging i can select from i believe 5 different keyboard setups...pretty sweet if you ask me, plus the HD2 has the biggest screen on the market at 4.3 inches....just thought i'd chime in
comparing the htc hd2 to the evo I will take the evo first. same size screen, but the evo is android where the hd2 is windows mobile, yuk!
Yes the HD2 is a winmo, but HTC did a very good job of hiding it with the HTC Sense. If you look at them the only thing that you would see from it being a winmo phone is the start menu at the very top. other than that its hidden very very well...also there is a download and other things that i can do to the HD2 to make it android...just dont feel like tinkering with it yet
swype is hard to say....its a full qwerty keyboard but instead of lifting your fingers to type you just slide your finger across each letter, in a way it is predictive
Sucks, but the guy who made that video is being fired from Best Buy even though he never mentions them in the video. There is also an evo customer at apple store video to go with it, equally funny. Looking forward to replacing my iPhone with a Droid X and making/receiving phone calls while at home.
