So, I finally joined the 20th Century this week and got the New iPod Nano Video, and obviously want to use it in the car. I would rather not drop the cash for a new deck right now, so what are my options?

I'm using the stock 6 disc head unit in the 02 WRX

Is the iTrip worth it or junk? Any better FM Modulators?
Is the casette tape deal complete junk?

    Thanks,

I would say casette tape is way batter than FM modulator. I used to have a charger/holder thing that had a earphone jack that you plug in the casette adaptar om and then plug in your ipod in. Worked great!

I use the cassette deck adapter and it works great for me. I have an 04 wagon so the antenna is in the back glass, i have tried 4 different FM modulators and all sucked hard, very hard.

+1 on that, the FM modulator has really poor quality. Imagine your radio signal, but 5x's worse

At least its better than Zune's fm mod. You can't even control the volume on the FM transmitter or the Zune once its hooked up.

my itrip does the job, but it's really my only option since my tape deck is crap. if my tape deck were working, I would definitely use the direct connection to that.

So, not trying to be a gigantic **** or anything, but why not just put the headphones in your ears? I used to have the 30gig video etc.etc. Now i only have a shuffle and all i do is listen to music on it....it works really well.

It's illegal (and not the brightest) to drive with headphones on. You could never hear an emergency vehicle.

pksublime, how long would that install take, and would you work for beer if I helped? What does that chip do, soes it transmit the signal directly into the head unit? I'm obviously not the brightest when it comes to this stuff.

My wife has a charger/FM transmitter that works really well for her iPod, but that's in her Nissan, can't say as I've ever tried it in the Subaru. 've used a really tiny cheap FM transmitter with my Sansa in the Subaru and it works OK, but sound quality isn't great.

I used to use a little self contained MP3 player/fm transmitter that plugged into a cigarette lighter and then you plugged a USB thumb drive into it. The interface sucked, but it worked really well. I'd leave it in my truck and use an FM radio at the jobsite to listen to it. Way better than having to listen to radio all day.

It directly interfaces with the CD changer. You pop in the CD supplied to you with nothing on it, plug in the mp3 player and away you go.

Depends on how many of the pieces you buy and where you want to have the plug coming out of the dash. It can be as short as an hour including the meet and greet, or up to a few if you want it to come out of your armrest center console. You might want to see mine first and then decide...

Oh and I wondered about headphones with my cell phone, because the headset that came with my phone has stereo earbuds - I suppose common sense that it's plugged into my phone should prevail unless I've pissed off the officer....

    *Update*

I went out and bought the casette adapter and have been using that until yesterday when this happened:

The stupid *$@^ tape deck thought the side was over and kept kept flipping from one side to the other, and I had it. Eject and *snap* - done. I blame the lack of sleep...

So, with that Jazzy deal, what pieces do I need to buy - I'm placing an order hopefully today.

    Thank you,

    Ted

If i was you, Check all the best buys. They are clearing out their alpine stocks. Both me and my wife are now rocking the IDA-X001. I wouldn't get anything else if you just want to use your ipod. It doesn't have a cd player. I found mine for $150. She lucked out and got it for $79.99.

I don't think they throw in the pocket. But the wiring harness makes installation a snap. I like this Kenwood for $150, and they're throwing in the iPod adapter.

I don't see where they say they're throwing in the adapter?

Assuming it does, I'd go with that one too. I've never had a complaint with a Kenwood head unit.

Anyhow, it used to be that if your stereo was replacing a double din unit with a single, Crutchfield would include a pocket or faceplate to fill in the empty space. I haven't ordered from them in a long time, so that may have changed.

For those of us who have trouble seeing the colour orange, I have highlighted the offer of the adapter in a nice red box

In that case, look down the left hand side of the screen. There should be a big orange button for the same thing that will open a pop-up with the same info.

It all depends on what you want. If you want to use the dock port then get the Subaru Aux-in Kit iPod (pro adds an audio filter for ground loop issues). The dock port gets used for auido and charging. You also have the option of using a standard headphone jack if you wish.

If you want to use olny the headphone jack then get the Subaru Aux-in Install Kit (or pro). No charging either...

yes, it can still be used.
The deck "thinks" it's playing a CD the whole time. You put a blank CD into one of the positions, and the iPod's informaiotn is wired directly into the head unit. I like the Jazzy product a lot.
