my car has the stock intake, but an upgraded filter. looking at other cars and the simple design of an intake, is it worth buying one? performance wise it should help (i believe), but i am concerned with the underhood heat, especially from the turbo.

    Any thoughts people?

i mean, i suppose you leave the stock air scoop from the front, that will channel cold forced air, but otherwise???

    Anyone, thoughts.. appreciate it!

Meh, mine is mostly a noisemaker (aps65mm). But with a tune, a well designed cai can yield some positive improvements.

Sucks that you need a tune for it but I wouldn't run a CAI unless I go bigger HP. Although a K&N drop-in filter doesn't hurt. You get pretty much nothing from a short ram, even with tune(I mean not worth the time doing it).

    Thats just me though.

Basically, when I knew I was getting a tune, these tests convinced me to throw on the intake...

I'm surprise the AEM is rated top. (maybe it was the AEM short ram that is bad?)

Don't bother with anything other than the stock setup for your car.....especially if it's Bill's old ride.

Unless that SRI is something like the Big MAF. Then you would gain MAF voltage, which would increase horsepower with appropriate mods (ie. bigger turbo).

kind of on topic - a question for ya'll...

A co-worker of mine said that his K&N filter's oil caused his MAF to get coated and generate a bad reading. Should I be worried about this if I run a K&N - and would any of you recomend going back to the paper filter?

Well, some people either over-oil their filter when cleaning it...or don't wait long enough between cleaning it and driving it. That can cause the MAF to get gunked up with oil. I just choose to run an OEM subaru one because I don't want to have to worry about it.

You only need to re-oil those filters every 50k miles I thinks

From what I understand, the panel filters (K&N, Perrin, etc...) may flow more air, but let more particulates pass through. Over oiling is a user error and is easily fixed.

It's been said already, but I'll say it in other words. An aftermarket intake (specifically a cai) can be tuned to net solid peak hp/tq gains, but there are better bang for the buck mods out there. Intakes are typically ranked pretty low on the bolt-on mod path.

I'm not too familiar with Bill's old car, but I would think the next small bang for the buck power mod would be a cheapo, used ihi or mhi turbo and injectors.

Def agreed, the oil version of filters do let more air pass, but it is more turbulent which doesn't help flow into the motor. i know this is true for motorcycles especially. the oil issue, people just need to be frugal with how much they spray on the filter. i have used K&N in my truck for 70K miles and my maf is still fine.

As for my car in specific, Bill said it has a new high flow filter thats NOT oil'd. they way it sits, im happy with it, so im leaving it alone. But as for upgrades, yea, the next thing would be a bigger turbo and a fmic. my fuel system is already up'd to 700cc injectors, so just a tune would be required...

but i told myself NO MODDING THIS CAR!!!!

no no no...i was lookin at the engine bay last night... and any car guy knows, the first mod is an intake... im like, why doesn't mine have it? there must be a reason. thats why i asked. some cars its worth it, some not. obviously, the wrx is not worth having an intake... thats all man...

yea, Emily, no modding!!!!!!!! i gotta stop somewhere!!!! besides, now i need to save for that turbo for the bike.

AJ, listen to him as he is the guy who tuned my car with the air intake system as it is now. the air fule ratio is spot on per his tail pipe sniffer.

what 700cc injectors are not enough? lol

you do not need a tune on that car until you add or change something on it power wise. ie turbo!
