First some information about the dog: Breed: Miniature Schnauzer Sex: Female Age: 3 years next month I felt this weird bump in her beard tonight. After putting a hot rag on it the large bump started to loosen up. It seemed to be a combo of a little blood and puss of some sort. Not exactly sure. As we were picking it out the hair in that area all started to fall out. After cleaning away all the crap she doesn't seem to have a large bump, but as you can see from the pic it almost looks like an ingrown hair or something. Also from the picture you can see some of the crap that was covering it up still in her hair. I've continued to put a warm rag on it. It doesn't seem to irritate her at all. When putting a little pressure on it there is some blood/puss mix coming out. Of course we didn't keep doing that. Just wondering if there's a vet in the house that could let me know what I'm dealing with. If there isn't anyone in the house and it's still there by wed I'm going to take her to our vet. Thanks in advance. -Ryan
I'm no vet but I can tell you it is very common with our boxer, we have learned it (in her case) is simply acne which i guess is common in boxers. she also has some allergies that can make her a bit sensitive. Probably nothing to worry about but I understand how these dogs are truly our babies and would'nt tell you NOT to go to the vet.
I would continue to clean it a couple of times a day as you are and apply a triple antibiotic ointment to the area. With a long haired coat it will just collect all the matter and hold it. I would wait out the rest of the week before you commit to that large vet bill.
Roon's soon to be wifey posting: I'm a vet tech, and it looks just like a pimple, but I can't really tell with my laptop screen. If the material that came out looked like normal zit like material, I'm sure that's all it was. Dogs (and cats) can get little cysts that can rupture and produce icky stuff like that too, but the material is usually harder to express. Now that it [the zit or cyst] has ruptured though, be sure to keep it clean and keep an eye on it for any infection. I would actually use ointment to a minimum since it's in an area that her tongue could reach and you don't want her ingesting any of the ointment. PM Roon or post here if you've got any more questions and I can help you out -Julie
Man - I didn't know I knew so much about animals. She for whatever reason refuses to post under her own username.
My family has had miniature schnauzers for as long as I can remember and all of our schnauzers have had similar bumps on their body. We always called them schnauzer bumps... http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&client=safari&rls=en&q=schnauzer+bumps&btnG=Search&aq=f&oq=&aqi= We got some special shampoo for them and they don't come back as often, but when they do we just bathe them a bit more often and keep the spot clean. P.S. - Miniature Schnauzers are great dogs.
You guys rock. Ben your right about the dog. Little Sophie is our baby. I'll keep an eye on it and make sure it stays clean. Thanks all!!
Ryan, she looks delicious! Glad to hear the little furball is ok, I get a kick out of her when I come over.
LOL Glad to hear about the dog ryan. I have seen similar things on my dogs before, and it was the same thing they were talking about above.
