    Well maybe not.

This is my '98 RS motor that had rod bearings issue when I was up in MN, for that DCTC event with Musashi, Fuji and them guys. Well, I finally had time to tear my motor apart and this is what I found.

This was the one where I was wondering why it's missing the notch at the tip of the rod bearings. Now I know why.

The crankshaft, it was chipped and had a few scuffs on it. Which means I need to buy a new crank T_T. As for the pistons, I was running too rich and started to detonate?

If oil was being burned, it would detonate also

ORLY? I didn't know. I was wondering why every time I change the oil. I only get 3.5qts, when I pour in 4.5qts of oil! Unless Mobil 1 is crappy??

You can get your crankshaft repaired, it might be cheaper than getting a new one.

It would not detonate if oil was burning, it also would not detonate if it was running too rich. My guess is the problem lies in your oil changing habits, Everything looks pretty burned, like it didnt get oil changes enough.... or perhaps the owner before you. SOME 2.5 DOHC na motors are insanely fragile for no reason.

Hmmmm....Odd, when I was still using Castrol FS. I would always have 4-4.xqts left over. Until I changed over to Mobil 1, recommended by Fuji <_<, that's when I started to notice that I'm burning oil or losing a quart or two of oil when I do an oil change. Oh yes, Fuji and I found a lot of interesting things about my car, darn that previous owner!

I thought about taking the crank to a shop to have them resurface it. Just don't know WHERE they do that here.

Well, when I had my car back in 2005. I babied it and I would do an oil change every 2500-3000 miles, rotate the tires since the car is up on jackstands, change the tranny oil, rear diff oil, air filter (K&N FTL!!), fuel filter. That was when I was still using Castrol FS though. Like I mentioned, I started to notice my car only having 2-3qts of oil left when I was using Mobil 1.

Although I did run into a few issues back then, like a loose connection, this wire to the left of the coilpack, name??? It wasn't tighten down all the way so it was causing the car to throw a misfire code, causing me to get VERY VERY POOR gas mileage and it pretty much threw everything off.

    Where is "SLP"???

As for the pistons, I'm thinking I can pretty much clean them and use them again?

if you had a spark related misfire where you had bad gas mileage you probably got lots of gas in your oil, that would explain the rod bearing easily!

I dunno, the rod bearing went during that event, BMW ACC, with Musashi and Fuji. I was driving it hard all day, chasing Musashi's old car (STi) around the course, playing in the skid pad. Then the last couple hours, I drove around the course then Musashi showed me a few or two and that's when it went *clunkclunkclunk* Got out, told Fuji to look at it and it was rod knock.

Oh well, I'll just update on pics of the rebuild. =P

15W oil and regular changes could have prevented that, that is just not enought lubrication or oil starvation. my .02
