I need a way to get the car out of the garage when it is stripped. $12 worth of steel and some old casters from work, some time, and problem solved. :rockwoot:

the important thing is are those wheels going to hold the weight?

I'm on the fence with the wheels. It all depends on what kind of plastic they are made out of. I could be pushing it, or have a fairly wide margain. I don't know what material they are made out of, so it's hard to say. I've found the range of yield strengths to be from 2900psi to over 21000psi, and the bearing stress I calculated with 1000 lbs acting on each corner is about 3000psi. I got the casters for free, so I thought I'd give them a try. If the plastic wheels fail too horribly, I'll turn out some aluminum ones to replace the plastic ones. The rest of the caster is fine.

If I pull the motor and tranny before I let it down, it shouldn't have any issue.

    Best idea ever!

also the small diameter wheels may make it hard to move on anything other than a smooth clean floor. Godd thinking though. couldnt think of a safer option.

Nicely done! Since all my car's are garage/ yard queens, I should just do the same. So you are starting the strip down then I take it eh?

I don't think the wheel itself would be the problem, the issue will be with the sheet metal housing they are mounted in. A trip to Northern Tool will solve this, buy the 4" steel casters.

why not just make "shoes" for the wheels - a square frame that the wheel sits in with a caster on either corner? i've seen those before and they seem a lot safer (unless you're suspension is removed then that wouldn't work - but I see wheels on the car in the pic)

why not make a wider platform for the jackstand itself and weld the wheel(s) to that? Seems alot more verstile that was instead of welding dierectly to your unibody eek!

um.. it could still slide off of a moving jackstand.. even a wrose idea than a lil bit of welding to the frame

he's parting out the car....it's got wheels on it now, but it won't once he's done.

I'd leave it on the stands until you get a good portion of the weight out. But, my '85 wagon weighed 400 lbs when we took it to the scrap yard. they'll definitely be usable once you get things stripped down a bit.

Yeah, I'm stripping the car of everything since it got T-boned, so I don't care if it is permanent. I need to be able to roll it out of the garage when its completely gutted. I'm probably going to pull the motor before I take it off the stands.

I'll make sure I move it around and jump on it before I'm comfortable with working underneath it. If the casters yield a bit, then I'll replace them with something beefier. In theory, the two 14 GA 2x2 members at each corner can support over 70,000 lbs in total with all four corners added together. Its just a matter of the casters holding up. If they do give, I see either the wheel itself deforming, or the bracket holdign the wheel letting go.

^ Hey now, that didn't involve any duct tape.

I think I'm going to have to wait until the whole driveline is out of the car. There just isn't a good spot to weld to for the inward brace. I'll still get them mostly ready to go.
