And It broke the 3rd day I owned it :*( One cylinder lost a crap ton of compression, friend currently is working on pulling it and I'm hoping for the best. It was a lot of fun though the 2nd day, I drove it a decent amount! I miss it.
Sometime soon I'll be finding out what happened exactly to the engine. It was running fine but their was smoke blowing on start, then it would go back to normal, and the power wasn't there like it was before. I'm planning on doing new plugs, along with a Timing belt. I want to get it running tip top shape again. Just didn't plan on this the 3rd day of owning it. That's how life goes though. Any good ideas to do while I have the engine pulled other than what I stated? I'm new to this Subaru world so I'd like any good advice in advance from now.
Congrats and welcome. Sorry to hear about the issues though. Sounds like another piston failure. What cyclinder. Assuming the ring land failed, other than using forged pistons on the rebuild, i suggest going with stronger head studs (if you plan to run high boost in the future). You might consider a new oil pick up as well. Good luck and keep us posted. White 04 STi's are one of my favorite subarus.
Ya this is the possibility right now. I need to find out what happened. I was inquiring other things on the engine that may be good to look into besides the clutch or things that I could replace in general. like, oh this part fails and such you should replace it soon or something that's worth changing while the engine is pulled . And the cylinder that went bad is the driver rear one, not sure what number that is.
^this. Don't feel bad about it... unless it was a built block. "Jackstand" has a built shortblock for sale also. Otherwise, see my post above for motor build parts. Supporting mods (like the clutch you mention, injectors, pump, intercooler, turbo, tune, etc...) are going to depend entirely on your budget and what you want out of the car.
Jackstands motor has been sold. You have an upgraded clutch in your car with injectors and fuel pump and a frontmount and ewg Next thing you can do with the built motor is a bigger turbo and bigger injectors.
I think their already is bigger injectors currently. We may have to replace the turbo but not sure. Whats a solid but affordable turbo that is better, possibly rebuild-able and that's not a big pocket grabber.
She is out of the car now. Soon I'll find what happened. From the sounds of everything it must be the piston cracked. So hopefully it didn't ruin anything on the block and its still usable.
You also have a coil pack that's missing a clip, so the harness keeps sliding off. it should be held with some electrical tape right now. I suggest you replace that one also.
You mentioned about replacing the turbo. With a bigger turbo, you're going to need atleast 1000cc's on e85.
I'm not to familar with this lingo. I think e means e85, but whats a 20g? some type of turbo or something? and what kind of supporting mods?
Cut the poor guy some slack, he just bought a car with a blown motor and is learning the hard way. 20g is a turbo, and a pretty damn large one at that. I'd first figure out exactly what you do have on your car as far as the turbo and injectors. Your car would have come stock with a VF39 and the fact that you are on E85 means that you don't have stock injectors as Nuke pointed out. Just keep asking questions if you don't know, but do some research also and you will receive a good amount of advice from the good folks on the site.
Easiest way to figure out what turbo is best for you (besides research, as mentioned above), is to figure out your budget, then talk to your tuner about your goals (also mentioned before). So figure out if you want to run low boost, high boost, where you want power to come on, how broad you want your powerband to be etc... i wouldnt worry too much about an abosolute hp/tq number. Everyones definition of "usable power" and daily drivability will be different. Some people dont want bigger than a stock turbo, others dont want smaller than a 20g. There are several different "sizes" of 20g turbos on the market as well. Some will spool a bit quicker than others. Some will hold a bit more power up top. 20g with full supporting mods is about as big as you can go before you start to notice a difference in when you reach full boost (compared to stock turbo). That said, a 20g setup can be made to push as much air with less boost at about the same rpm as a tuned stock turbo setup, so you wont necesarily be losing power at the same rpm compared to a stock turbo setup. Power delivery will be different though. Personally, i like the hta68, 18g, and 20g (with proper supporting mods) setups that ive driven. Any larger and i dont like the abruptness you feel going from off boost power to on boost. But thats my personal opinion. Others like it. You gotta decide what you want (besides "reliable").
Also, figure out (again, preferrably with your tuner... i would suggest nuke since he already knows this car) what mods are on the car first. Then you can figure out what additional mods you might need. Sounds like injectors, fuel pump, turbo, and possibly intercooler.
Sti used to be own by me. I sold it about a year ago and the buyer sold it to him a few weeks ago. Link below shows the mod list. Vehicle was tuned by Nuke. http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2176513
that looks like a cracked piston to me. that's what i thought it was when you told me the compression in that cylinder.
