Hi Everybody! i just moved up here a few weeks ago from Austin, TX. Currently I have an 08 WRX Hatchback. It is my 3rd WRX I've owned. I had an 02, 06 and now my 08 I see a lot of WRX's and STi's on the road so I know I made the right decision to move here! I have heard it is a little colder here in the winter than Texas though. I need to fix that!
You can "fix" that cold issue with a nice set of snow tires on a mediocre set of winter rims. Whatever qualms you have about being able to see your breath in 10 degree weather ought to be at least partially addressed by 20 degree drifts... Also... Welcome! Texas has stolen enough Minnesota residents, it's about time we get one back!
Well, hopefully I dont freeze to death. I have 1 sweatshirt and 1 long sleeve t-shirt  in Texas we had a few garage friendly places to go and get mods done to our car. They were all pretty legit and respected Subie people down there. Any Subaru friendly places here? I have a few things I want to do to my car but I guess I need to unpack everything first
there is a few different options for working on your car... there is alot of forum members who dont mind wrenching for a bit of cash that is, and there is also a few local shops that are on these forums as well...just be sure to search around on here, you'll find em. welcome to MNSubaru post some pictures if you got any and be sure to try to get to some weekly meets!
weekly meets such as the tuesday lake calhoun, lets hope the weather is somewhat decent today, are a great way to meet people. Make some new suby friends and find a wealth of info. As for garages, the simple jobs can be done at some places for little more then a case of beer and the willingness to learn, for more complex jobs you have a lot of guys that will do it for a great price compared to what a dealer or shop would charge. And for the biggest jobs your looking at one of the local shops, ask around and get some input on them at some of the meets before you go and drop of your baby for them to rip into.
Awesome! Beer is the universal currency! If anybody rides bikes (pedal bikes) let me know too. I moved up here to take a position with HED. Cycling. Next to my WRX addiction, bikes are number 2. I have 6 bikes in a 1 bedroom apartment.
Welcome. You will enjoy your car in the snow. If you are free Tuesday nights come to uptown to hang out by the lake.
Hmmmm. MNSubaru pedal pub night? http://www.pedalpub.com/ I just did it last weekend and it was easily the top 3 drunkest nights of my life and right up there as one of the most fun too! Lots of bike enthusiast on here too. I traded some install time for a trek 420 road bike last year
hopefully I dont need to do that. I am realllllllyyyy trying to not do that. I told myself to not go crazy with this WRX as I did with my last 2. I think that lasted about 2 days
Not being a bike enthusiast, I had never heard of HED (I had to Google). You must be a real hotshot in your field if they went all the way to Texas to hire someone considering we have a lot of high tech companies (and I assume people) in this area. No disrespect intended. You could have left your crazy-ass hot weather in Texas rather than bringing it along (I am looking forward to winter, and I hate winter too). Hope you enjoy it here and good luck with the new job.
Well, thank you They are a good company. Good enough to make me move Does Minneapolis have any emission requirements? I was looking to get a downpipe and get rid of my cats but didnt want to fail an emission test. Texas didnt have any kind of testing but When I lived in Ohio it did
No worries up here. Probably around 70-80% of us have done away with the cats. Also, welcome! Buy a winter jacket as your first MN mod. lol
Yeah not to worry there, just be careful with how loud it is/or can be. Some police officers don't care if you have loud exhaust, but others will slap you with tickets any chance they get. In Minneapolis they seem to have more things to worry about than exhaust and other car noises, but if you go to some of the suburbs don't be surprised if you get a ticket. Not trying to make it sound like it's bad up here (it really isn't) but just want to let you know to be careful in some places,
Welcome, if for some reason you find yourself trapped in St. Cloud, our shop space is open to you 24/7.
Yup. http://www.dmv.org/mn-minnesota/license-plate-faqs.php and http://www.dps.state.mn.us/dvs/PlBrochure/PlateFrame.htm
Welcome! I'm from Texas as well. You'll really dig January and February ;-) (I lived off of Manchaca when I was in Austin...still think of moving back every January and February!)
yeah I hate running front plates. Buddy of mine runs a SRT4 with no front plate and he hasnt got pulled over yet, maybe they feel sorry for him that he drives a neon
I'm new to the forum as well and also enjoy Subies, beer, and bikes very much. PM me if you wanna chill or cruise sometime.
Welcome to MN! I'm another bike geek, I work at QBP. Oh, and I got nailed last week for the whole front plate thing.
Nice! I need to stop by QBP sometime. Lord knows I have given you guys enough money!! If I supply the beer is anybody interested in helping me install a cat back? The downside of living in an apartment is no room for my stuff. I have most of it in a storage shed ...... in Texas.
Yeah, I know how that goes. Now I work there, and have an employee credit account with them. Drop me a line when you want to see the place, I would be more than happy to show you around. I would not mind seeing HED's operation either... Let me know about that cat-back too. I have not worked on a subaru before, but I'm pretty ok with the cars.
'course you definitely will need to dress the part. I tell everyone that I get to experience the winters here more than most since I live in an apartment with two Labs that I walk three times a day, every day, no matter what the windchill is ;-) you'll make it!
Hey man, I'm actually new to the twin cities area as well (not new to Minnesota though) and I also like biking - mountain biking in particular. Let me know if you even want to ride!
