Well I just noticed yesturday that my car came equiped with a TurboXS manual boost controller. I bought the car from BP Subaru at 22k miles and am now at 47k and boost has always been at 13 with no problems that i've ever noticed.

After reading the sticky on mbc here i'm wondering if it should be taken out and returned to stock or if its been fine for this long just leave it?

I deffinately baby the car and usually do the cruise control thing on the highway. Along with the spirited cruise from here to there occasionally.

I'd rather return to stock if there is danger to engine of course. And also what needs to be done to return it to stock? If its fairly simple I'd like to try it myself

    Thanks for the help all.

    Alrighty then

So I shouldn't turn the boost up to 20psi then? J/K

Thanks I'll take a look and see if the oem controller is still there. Crossing fingers considering they also installed a cold air intake and didn't leave the oem intake, lame.

Disclaimer: I am also a noob, but I've been reading alot to educate myself :ugh:

I think you should be careful taking the MBC off before you figure out what kind of adjustments have been made to get it there (probably a custom map that expects the new boost controller).

Are there any signs of piggyback Engine Management, like a Cobb Access Port? Even if not, there is a good chance that the stock ECU has been reflashed.

If everything looks good around the ECU, I would suggest getting a hold of (borrow, meet up with someone or buy) a Tactrix cable and check if the map loaded is stock/what changes have been made.

Side Note: _Some_ CAI's (with non-standard diameter) cause the MAF to read incorrectly, feeding the ECU incorrect values.

    yup

Thanks for the advice all, i'll check into it all and try and figure out before I mess with anything.

I might just take that air box off your hands. Any benefits of going back to stock airbox? I've heard a few but not enough to justify a return to stock yet.

    Yes, early '02 mbp

I don't like a CAI on a MAF equipped car. Besides the problems it could cause with non-standard diameter piping causing the MAF to freak out, you're still gonna have to take the filter off the thing at one point or another and wash it out and re-oil it. If you happen to have just a little too much oil on it when you re-install it (which I've done before), some of that oil can get sucked onto your MAF sensor and also make it freak out. Stupid MAF is super sensitive.

I wonder why there would be a MBC on there and yet only boosting 13 psi? Isn't that less than what a stock 02 boosts on the stock controller?

I've never heard good things about MBCs on subarus.

about a week after re-oiling, you can just use high-concentration isopropyl alcohol and a q-tip the sensor if you're worried. Just don't fling the oil on there like a nut bag and you should be fine...at least when it comes to the filter thing...even though this thread is about an MBC ;)

If I had to guess i'd say that the original owner lowered the mbc so it would reflect stock boost which I believe is 13psi on the '02. Feel free to correct me if i'm wrong on that but from the searching i've done thats what i've found.

I did this. thats why me CEL is perma on now.

I did this too. i broke the hot wire w/ the q-tip. expensive mistake.

anyway i would ditch the MBC. chances are that everything EM wise is still fairly stock and by removing the MBC you should be fine. if not put it back in.
