Wow, so I just gave my two weeks notice at work today. I still kinda can't believe it. I don't have anything lined up yet, which is why it's somewhat freaky. I'm going to be a freelance technician (many people make a nice living this way) for a while until I can find another theatre, or production house that is hiring full time positions. But...holy crap... I've never actually just up and quit a job before. I do believe that it was the best decision though. Time to move on. Even so, I feel kinda bad because I'm the only staff technician at the place, and take care of carpentry, lights, sound, video, crew, payroll for crew, and our touring shows (this ever-increasing list (with same pay) is a big reason I'm leaving). But that is going to leave them in quite a lurch. Just wanted to blab about it a bit
^^We're going into Tech Week for the next show on Monday. It would have been career suicide to pull that. The show will be up and running when I quit. So they'll have some time to figure out what to do.
well many tech places just up and tell you to go home, so i would never feel bad about doing the same to them. think of how many people, hundreds, in a day at the same company find out their company paid and already set up a shop in india, and they get to go home now. Friend of mine decided to be the stay at home dad during the day and now does a night time job, but i know it is party from the stress of him seeing half his staff get layed off, he wasnt one, but could of all to easy. My job, I think I would get my 2weeks notice, but id maybe catch a cold around then too. I will keep an eye out for anything in your field. I know a couple companies that do your kinda stuff, and know your passionate about tech stuff. Just watch that budget, and try not to get sucked into selling stuff off that youll regret later, loans ftw! family or banks, whatever.
And when they break something, you get get to saunter in, fix it for twice the pay, then head off back into the sunset. Freelancing is cool if you can just deal with the uncertainty. Stuart.
The downside of quitting with nothing lined up is the potential loss of leverage at the negotiating table with a prospective new employer. Good luck in your search!
my primary source of income for the last yea and a half or so has been freelance music gigs. and as the handfull of people to whom I owe money will tell you, it's not going so hot hopefully you have better luck (which I'm sure you will...not many people springing for a string quartet at their wedding over the winter...but we've got some gigs lined up for summer)
Good luck w/ going freelance. its always weird breaking out on your own. it sounds like the production house yoru at is going to be kinda hard up after you leave (how nice of you to stay through the next setup), perhaps you could just freelance to them lol.
yeah it's a weird feeling not having anything lined up.. i quit my sales job last october, couldn't find anything that paid what i need... so i had to fall back on a cooking job to pay the bills..
getting fired is kinda like quitting, only... you get fired, and you don't have 2 weeks to realized your fked.
Took me 8 before I found mine once I graduated college. I still worked during 6 of those 8 months, but it was a pretty crap job just to pay the bills. Good luck.
I'm on just under six months, but I've gotten licensed in Minnesota. So if anybody knows an attorney who might be hiring, let me know...
I spent the last two years in-house at Menards. Save big money! Before that I was in private practice doing personal injury and family law. Very messy. :ugh:
thats cool. i have a brother thats in patent law, so i was just curious. heh and sorry for the hijack there techy... any new jobs yet, or is the weather toooo nice out to find a job, hehehehe
