This just started last night - occasionally when I bring the truck to a stop it will just shut off. No drama, it's just like the key was turned off. It fires back up right away. I have felt it hiccup while driving a few times as well. A quick search indicates this may be the PMD/FSD - what are people's thought's on this? I don't have time to do a detailed search since I'm at work and rushed for time to fix this.
So it just dies, no hiccups, no bucking, just flat out dies?? Does it matter if it is warm or cold?? Can you make it happen or is it just random?? What I have seen is that these trucks are real picking on the spark module. If you truck has the external coil, the module is on the same bracket and has 2 weather pack plugs that goes into it. When that module dies, it kills the spark (or starts at random times) and the motor will just die with no fan fair. If it is any kinda of fuel problem, usually there is a little bucking/stuttering before it just drops off. Russ
Its a diesel. Just a heads up, I dont think carl specified in the first post. So I think that takes care of the spark situation.
correct, i copied pasted and forgot the 6.5 diesel part lol it is seemingly at random - truck can be cold or warm, there is no bucking or sputtering it's just on and then off. I can not make it happen, doesn't matter if it's in gear or not or if the brake is on or not. fuel filter or PMD seem to be the two culprits that come up for the 6.5 turbo diesel as far as my searches go
its not cold enough for the fuel to be jelling up is it? my experience its around +20-0 when that starts to happen. And it would happen even if my truck was warmed up.
can you feel it coming on? like a drop in RPM. If so could you power brake through it? hold the gas a lil and the break?
lol, well thats all I got! Hope you get it fixed man. If you guys need help, pm/call me and I'll come over. I have an interview tomorrow at 11am, but should be available after 1pm.
It's either the Lift pump (unlikely with this particular symptom) the little computer on the injection pump ( can't remember the name for that) or the pump. There's no way to fix it besides replacing the said part. The really sweet thing is that you don't' know which one is causing it until you replace one of them. The Controller is like $500, the pump is over $1000 I believe. Right now, it doesn't sound like it's too bad, but soon enough it'll start dieing randomly while your driving, and then it'll make starting it virtually impossible (some times taking 1+ hour of starting it, revving it just for it to die again. I put a battery disconnect in mine so when I killed the first one doing it I could still have a fresh battery to keep going...) Basically, it's gonna come down to deciding if a $1500 fix is worth it for you. I don't know how many miles are on yours, but here's something to think about: My 6.5TD had 250k miles and had this happen 6 times, my dad's 130k mile 6.5TD had it 3 times, and my dad's 6.5TD suburban is on it's 3rd or 4th at 120K. So basically, between the 3 trucks I know of with this problem it has cost around $20k... ...or maybe I have no idea what I'm talking about at all...who knows haha.
that's what this is - most of my searches reveal that the PMD is what actually goes out. I've seen relocation kits (the PMD, a harness, and a heatsink for under $400) - that way the PMD is no longer mounted on the pump which heats and kills the module over time. it seems the pump itself isn't nearly as common as just the module. the pump is freakin expensive we replaced the fuel filter and put in some diesel 911. It died at idle a few minutes after that but didn't happen again all night.
Yeah, the little heat sink and remote mount do help, that setup on my dad's Burb made the last one last about 40k instead of 30k haha. Sorry for the my first doom and gloom response, I was just remembering all the headaches my 6.5 gave me in the last few months of its' life. I really loved my 6.5 when it ran, but I only payed $500 for it so I just couldn't justify fixing it again
