Anyone going to Haughton MI for the Lake Superior pro rally race? The GF and I are gonna go for the weekend and help a friend who is racing. We're gonna be pit go-fers (distant relative to the pit-bull). Hotel rooms are going fast, check http://www.lsprorally.com/ if you're interested.

I'm gonna be up there both to visit Michigan Tech and to go to the rally. I;ll be volunteering as a course marshall.

My folks have a cabin (more like a house) 15 minutes west of Houghton on Lake Superior so since I have a nice place to crash for free I will certainly be up there. In fact I've got the weeks off either side of the rally. I don't know yet if I'll be codriving, running sweep with my brother, marshalling, or just spectating here and there. LSPR was the first rally I went to in 1999 and I haven't missed one up there since, my favorite rally of the year :D

Cool, sounds like some people will be at a bar called the Library? I'm staying at the Holiday inn express. They only had a king size bed with a jacuzzi left...woohoo!

You guys should all put one of those "you've been spotted" MNSubaru signs in your window. I know it's tacky but then you'd have an idea of who is who.

I'll buy the first round at the Library on Friday evening. I'll be there late Thursday evening through Sunday. Look for a blue'06 Sti, come up and say hi.

That's gotta be sweet having a cabin on the lake. I grew up in Duluth and spent the better part of my youth down on the rocks. Who would you be co-driving for?

I'm planning on heading up with my brother and some friends. I know some people who go to school up at MI Tech. so will stay with them. Be sure to check out the micro-brews at the Keywinaw Brewery and eat a pickeled egg across the channel in this little bar on the main road thru Hancock. Fun stuff.

I'm going for sure. When just depends on if my bother and buddy can skip some classes and work to take off early Friday. We will get up there for some of the late evening and night stages for sure though. Hopefully it doesn't rain like last year. The cold and wet were so worth it though. :)

Word is the Library's food sucks now that it's owned by someone else. However there's a new brew pub in town that sounds like it should be the new place to hang out. Or the Doghouse again. Also heard they're putting in an Applebee's if anyone is looking for mainstream food. And I always make a trip to the Michigan House in Calumet.

As stated before I'm still planning on being there for the race, however I have to cut short the week and half of vacation I was going to spend up there because I have to help move one of our location's entire technology infrastructure to a new location sometime near the end of October :x

Primetime: Nope, never been up there for the race. I'm really looking forward to it. I grew up on the other end of the lake up in Duluth.

Rallynavie: What's the name of the new place if the Library isn't the place to go?

I believe it's the Keweenaw Brewing Co.. As I'm sure you can guess they carry their own beers as well as quite a long list of others.

Or we can just crash the Doghouse like some of the codrivers go when the drivers have gone to sleep

Actually the brewery doesn't have a long list of others. It's a tiny little place with only their own beers. A better place is the DT (downtowner) on the right side at the end of that main drag right before you turn onto the bridge. They have a patio area to sit outside if the weather is decent, ok food and pleanty of drinks. Or you can go for fishbowls, not like fishbowls at Sgt. Prestons on 7 corners, but like huge brandy snifter fish bowls. I don't remember the names of these places, but I remember about where they are.

Hey, I got it. There's no way I'm gonna find any of you when I'm up there unless you have something on your car for identification. How about putting a copy of that "You've been spotted" tag in your rear window.

I know it's kinda dumb but it would be help to check in the lot of a bar and see if there were any MNSubaru club stickers in windows. Then I know that I can crash the place and get drunk, stupid and arrested and you guys will bail me out of jail...right guys, you'd bail me out...right?...guys?

I don't have a 'you've been spotted' tag. :( or a MNSubaru Club sticker. :? I like Rich's idea of starting a list of who's going, but I don't know how we do that? Can we just start a post and keep modifying it to add peoples names?

Then a few days prior if we don't have a plan for meeting we can PM phone numbers around and just meet up by good ol cell phones if we don't just fine one another.

I may be the only wingless blue GT up there. I've got the "in memory of numbers 4" in the rear window, though you may see a fair amount of those on other cars.

I just made the mistake of looking at the Joes crab shack menu before lunch...bad idea.

Justin put up the official "you've been spotted" sign in this thread, you can download it and print it up. Put one of these in your rear window deck so I know who to buy beer for...no sticker, no free beer!

    http://www.mnsubaru.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=3360&highlight=mnsubaru

Oh, and my '06 Sti will be sportin a new Mines CF mini-spoiler instead of the Uber Tail. I'll be the only wingless WRB '06 STi there...I hope. You guys can all tell me how great it looks...one beer per exuberant outburst of "you're scoob is t3h roXors" :D

It's too bad they don't let anyone spectate on the Brockway stage anymore. That stage was awesome, especially near the top of the hill where many of the cars jump. I've got the videos, but don't know if I can post them.

Oh I fully understand and support their decision to close Brockway off to spectators. I was up there the last year it was open to the public and about 90% of the crowd there were just total arseholes. Nobody was listening to the stage marshals because "this is public property I can go wherever I want on it" and "I live around here so we pay for your stupid race" (actual phrases overheard). People were literally right on the sides of the paved road, which is only maybe a lane and a half wide there at the yump. And by far the worst behavior was all the idiots who left before all the club cars had come through, and since the only way out is back up the road to the finish they were walking with their chairs (STROLLERS EVEN!!!) right on the road as the club guys were coming through there. I was pissed when I saw that happening

Spectators ruined that stage so spectators will have to do without it. Once upon a time you could go up there and there would be maybe a couple dozen rally regulars just sitting in the grass having a picnic several yards from the road on the hill there, everyone had room to see and nobody left until well after the second running of the stage. It's good that the teams still get a chance to run it, though I've heard rumors they may not run it all after all the f'wits that try to hike through the woods to get on the stage. Just let it be.

Why can't you post the vids? If you need a host for them let me know.

    Garrett,

Thanks for a well thought out and spot on explaination of the Brockway/spectator issue. It is unfortunate that a few had to ruin it for the many.

I thought the stage was closed to spectators last year. I'm pretty sure it said it was closed on all of the spectator maps, but I'm sure people went up there anyway like you said. We just drove part of the stage the day after to check it out. I hope people listen and stay off so the racers can do it.

I'll try to post the vid here. I love it how his bounce is further than the jump most people had. Also, did you see how the car is off the ground before the crest of the hill? Crazy. :D

hmmm no luck on the vid. Any suggestions? Am I too new to post a video? It is 1.64Mb in size and a .mov file. Every time I browse for it and select it my explorer runs for a bit, seems to finish uploading to this post and then it doesn't show in the attachment field.

Must be Pat Richard in the white GpA Impreza? At least I think that's what he was driving for that event that year. That would have been the last year they allowed spectators up there. I was up there watching that from atop the brick wall that year. The reason they're airborne is the hill levels off a little bit early so the cars launch before the crest. There's another yump about halfway up but it was always a tough one to get to and not much room for spectating.

You can email me the vid and I can host it if it won't let you post it here.

The spectators are always the problem with spectator sports. The people running things just want everyone to be safe but people are stupid and have to either push the limits or ignore the rules. Drag about closing off part of that stage, sounds like it was a hoot place to watch from.

    www.4wheelracing.com/media/richard-jump.mov
    www.4wheelracing.com/media/pr-monster-jump.avi
Please save locally before viewing so as not to ruin it for everyone else.

That was the last year Brockway was open to the public and you can get an idea why from those clips. On the one where it has the single clip you can see a bunch of people standing on something. There's a short stone wall there and I was one of those standing back there on it. I got quite a good view of Pat going airborne there. The scary part was the bounce but he recovered it well. I think Dennis Martin had the record for the craziest jump before him in his old DSM. Shot both the front struts through their mounts doing that Dukes of Hazzard style

Too bad I can't go this year, this would have been a blast.
Sorry to hear about the crowd control stuff too - I think rallying will take off in a big way in the states when you can have live video feeds to some sort of spectator area and/or television multichannel broadcasts, with a select few spots roped off for spectators on course. Until we can accomplish that and better, we'll just have to keep supporting the sport as we can. Have fun guys!

We all should try to make a tentative plan of where to meet up some time. I'll look at the stages and try to figure when a decent time would be. Maybe to meet at the DT or the micro brewery.
