Sorry, no car pictures.. most of the waterfall pictures are in thailand, the mountains, river.. are from Laos....

oh.. annd yes.. the Laos Mountain Pass (running north - South from Phonsavanh to Vientiane.. 8hr drive.. ~3-4hr with a nicely modded suby.. ) is pretty aggressive.. there's a picture of a nice hairpin there...

Joe, Great pics man. I plan to visit Thailand and Laos either this year or the next for sure. I have to see Laos my birth country for once. I still have distant family there but will only go if I have a companion. My wife won't be able to make it with me this year if I go so maybe I'll have to wait until next year when she can go with me. Give me some tips on surviving there. I know toilet paper is my number one fan for sure :D.

man I had a blast.. i think next time i do go, would much better because I know my way around and I wouldn't go with my parents.. parents get in the way of girls sometimes.. LOL.. that's why I ditched them my 3rd week there. Hahah..

and no.. i would not recommend going without your wife Yosmiley...

I would love to go again this coming winter 05-06.. hrmmm..

yes.. toilet paper is a necessity, and is not taken for granted there. 2000 kip in laos for a foot .. 1000kip just to use the "public" restroom.. 1000kip = $.10 ;P

There is a curse on old Vets who fought in the war. Who ever goes there would die after. So they say and I believe it. 2 of my uncles went and never came back. a year after my dad went, he past away. I would never leave the United States.

    Those scenes look familiar...

It's not just toilet paper taht is in short supply, it's paper in general. When I go over to work, I bring my own notebooks and such because they usually frown upon handing it out. It's kind of a weird thing, we just print everything out here like it's nothing, but you have to think twice over there.

I spent one day taking quite a tour from Bangkok down to Kanchanaburi up the Kwai via train and then on to a huge resevoir near the border of Burma. The mountains in that part of the world are insane, like saw blades. Why too freakin hot, too. When we were up in the mountains along the Kwai, it was 105F at noon!

Oh, I almost forgot about the GoKarts. We were down near Pattaya (on the Gulf of Thailand) and went on a real "Grand Prix" track. They had 125cc karts for about $2 US per ride of ~10min. There was a little pond on the inside of the carousel and there was a sign that said 200 baht (~$5 US) if you put it in the water. The reason for the charge? To rebuild the engine. I was more worried about what was in the water than the $5 fine. The karts were actually quite fast, not shifters, but definitely faster than ProKart karts. They had to bump start them as there was no clutch. What was most shocking, though, was the liability. They have you sign a waiver that requires your hotel, passport #, and emergency contact (in the US). Once you sign the waiver, pretty much anything goes. They require a helmet, but two of the guys I was with were wearing sandals. We all were wearing sort sleeve shirts and shorts, but they offered a thin canvas jacket if desired.

    ...good times, good times...

pictures?? sure.. just let me know when.. here's my email..

    [email protected]

i'm gonna get a new lens adapter for my camera after my tax money comes in.. then i'll have some better pictures.. the cam is capable of taking pictures up to 12megapixels in uncompressed RAW mode.. so if you wanted a 24 x 36 picture.. that would be impressive...

back to the thread.. anyway.. i wish i would have had time to go down to Pataya.. but I'll go again soon. 105 in the mountains? that must have been during the summer months.. this time of year it barely hits 80 in the mountain regions..

When we did that trip, it was early May. It was a bit warm for the time of year, but definitely nowhere near records...

Bangkok is unbelievably congested, I wouldn't even consider driving myself. I have never been further north than Ayutthaya so the northern part is pretty unknown to me...
