im looking to get a laptop. but i dont know 2 much about all the laptops that are on the market. im going to use it for music movies(making/watching) and for school. looking for something with above 3gb memory and 350gb harddrive i love the fully keyboard option. olther than that idk whats a better system windows xp windows 7 and so on also all the different processors which are good which are bad if u have any input would love to hear it thx
For what it's worth, I have had good luck with my HP. My wife's Sony is another matter (fixed twice, bad stick of RAM and cooling fan died). If you are looking to but new, I don't think you can find anything mainstream still with XP, or even Vista for that matter. I would think for making movies you would want the fastest processor and as much RAM and hard drive space your wallet can afford. Good luck.
Dan, tell us a little more about how you intend to use it and what programs you need to run. Sounds like you want to store a bunch of movies and music on it too. What software program will you be using to make movies? What are you studying in school and how do you see yourself using it? Will you be mostly web browsing and word processing? Or will you need specialized software for school (like for a design degree or something)? How often will you be running these programs simultaneously? Also, what's your budget and do you have a size limit (something that will fit in a backpack, or would you prefer a 19" screen)?
going to school to get a small business degree so i can open a bar. so word processing programs would be alot of what i used to cpu for. i forgot the name of the software im getting for making videos. i also want to run virtual dj for music i problay have music and moves on extreal HD as for size im open but would like a full keyboard. budget is around a grand or cheaper but could be push a little above a grand. between sonys, hp, dell and so on they all run different processors and i know moting about them. like in intel pentium d still good or whats the differenced between core i3 and core i7 im open to any type of labtop just looking to get some thing that would run fine and last a couple of years. also what spywear and anti virse would you run
Where to start... Processors: Pentium D is old news. Core i7 > i5 > i3. However, avoid the Core i3/i5/i7 processors that are followed by UM. UM = Ultra Mobile and means better battery life, but less power. If you are doing Virtual DJ and Video Editing, you want the power. Generally Intel > AMD right now for mobile processors. RAM/Memory: Look for DDR3 RAM, more is better. Most will be 3-4GB. Hard Drive: 7200rpm drives will be better performing, and have a slight impact on battery life. I wouldn't worry to much about this. Video Card: Would be good for Video Editing, but may impact battery life. Unless you go with Switchable Graphics. Then you get the best of both worlds. Screen: Go with the highest resolution you can get. Lenovo's WXGA+ option is worth it. Buying: Use FatWallet.com when you buy and save 5% at HP and 3% at Lenovo. Many other stores are available here. It's a free discount. Anti-Virus/Spywear: Most computers will have Windows 7, I'd just get the Windows Security Essentials software for free and call it a day. W7 is much safer and WSE is a safe and lightweight option. Operating system: Go 64-bit if you can. Utilize all 4GB of RAM for resource-intensive tasks. Worth a small fee to get. <$50. Most will be free though. Suggestions: HP Envy - Great laptop. Solid build quality, 2yr warranty, Great performance and battery life with the Switchable Graphics. http://www.shopping.hp.com/webapp/series/category/notebooks/ENVY14_series/3/computer_store Lenovo T410 - My personal favorite brand of laptop. Better performance than the HP. Very popular in Business Classes. North American support. Look at the $979 model with Switchable Graphics and better CPU. http://shop.lenovo.com/SEUILibrary/...-category-id=24ABE3A59126498186434450AAAFE461
ld say that given what you are doing, a Mac wouldn't be a terrible choice. The only consideration is that for business school you will want Parallels/VMWare to run Windows. I recently graduated with my business degree and found that srudents with Macs had a bit more technology trouble when it came to using it in class. The only other problems I have with Macs would result in a flame war, so it's your call if you want to go that route. It isn't a bad one, just not the best IMO.
I would say pattertj has it right in his first post. Im building a gaming computer from scratch for the first time. Alot of people under power when they buy and sometimes you get what you pay for. Processor- Try for i5 at least. i7 if you need hyperthreading or use CAD programs. Most programs dont hyperthread making spending the extra on the i7 a waste for right now. RAM- DDR 3 and 4gb. OS- Win 7 home premium 64bit - This will work with your 4GB RAM above. HD- 7200RPM (SPEED) then get the biggest you can afford 500gb should be ok if you park your vid and pics on the external Graphics card- 1GB card ati or nividia Screen- I like big so usually go 17in with the highest resolution but you can go into a store and check them out see which you like best. If you can upgrade from a 6 cell to 9 cell I usually do it....
Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-460M Dual Core Processor (2.53 GHz, 3MB L3 Cache) with Turbo Boost up to 2.8GHz Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-450M Dual Core processor (2.40GHz, 3MB L3 Cache)with Turbo Boost up to 2.66 GHz Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-560M Dual Core Processor (2.66 GHz, 3MB L3 Cache) with Turbo Boost up to 3.2GHz Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-580M Dual Core Processor (2.66GHz, 3MB L3 Cache) with Turbo Boost up to 3.33GHz what does this all mean? whats the differentence with each one?
The only real difference is in speed. The 5xx Series has support for a few features that I can guarantee 99.99% of people don't use/care about. You probably won't notice much difference between the 4 of them .26 MHz is a very small amount. I would upgrade your Hard Drive or RAM if feasible before these. Otherwise, spend as much as you are comfortable with on the Processors.
