i have a 97 legacy gt 2.5 dohc and i am doing the head gaskets and just got the heads machined today.
what i am asking is number one, which mark is it on the crank to find top dead center. there is an arrow and a dot on separate spots of the crank, i dont know which one it is.
And number two, is there any way that i can retard or advance my timing to effectively and safely increase perf?
Even if its only a few degrees, ill take what i can get!

oh yeh and does anyone know if i can do any sort of cam swap from an sti or anything to cost effectively increase perf?

i dont know how to get it to tdc, you cant advance the cam timing, the cam gears are non adjustable, delta cams does regrinds

If you're looking to get the timing belt on back correctly, you don't have to worry about timing. Does your motor run a distributer?

Your motor basically has marks/notches on the cam gears as well as the crank gear fro teh timing belt. A NEW timing belt has markings on it and you basically align it with the markings/notches on the cam gears and you're all set.

I've done it on my SOHC as well as DOHC EJ-series motors.

The arrow on the Crank gear points up to a mark on the oil pump next to the pickup. The cam gears have hash marks, one I and 180 from that two II

Align the single mark on the cam sprocket to the mark on the timing belt cover backing plate. The Intake cams mark points UP.

The single mark on the EX cam lines up with the timing belt cover backing plate. These marks point out.

Then you need to verify that the Two (II) marks are point to eachother. The marks on the intake point down. The marks on the Exhaust point up and line up with the intake cam.

DO NOT MODIFY THIS CAM TIMING YOU WILL BE VERY SORRY!

I know that they're not adjustable, but can i perhaps turn the crank a little ways back?

Also, i know where the marks on the cams are supposed to be and i got those right, but im wondering about the crank and where it should be possitioned because the timing belt that i have doesnt have any marks on it.

you need to get a belt that has
marks, and you dont want to mess with the timing AT ALL, unless you want to bend valves

if you get eh belt directly from th dealership it whould have marks on it. mine did.

since you have the 2.5l, that engine is an interference engine. that means that the valves and piston wil overlap if the two are in teh same place at the same time (this is way you dont wanna break a timing belt on an interference motor) so cahnces are if you are off with the timing belt you will need a new valve train.

i heard that being off by 1 tooth on the belt can be up to 15 degrees off on the timing. dotn worry too much it is fairly easy to see when you are off. i tried running mine whiel teh timing was off by 1 tooth. (i have the ej22 a non interfecne motor so my valves are safer tehn yours) lets just say that it didnt like to run like that. lotsa black smoke.

    good luck

I went to NAPA and asked them if I could look at a timing belt. Then I marked the timing belt according to the one that I asked for. It works fine. Have a good marker in hand though, those color gel markers or whatever they're called.

    How about this...
    1. Your crank gear(for the t-belt) has a single line on it that marks TDC. It should be...not always...but should be 180* from the keyway in the crank. It's a small mark, but if the gear is clean, it's easily seen.
    2. Your cam gears are not adjustable! Don't mess with them, unless you want to spend lots of $$$$. There are two sets of marks on each cam pulley. The single line on the intake cams should point straight upwards or just a hair off, and the double lines then should face straight down.
The exhaust cam pulleys also have two sets of marks also, the double lines will face the double lines on the intake cams, and the single lines will face the outside of the timing covers where there should also be a single notch.

I have a t-belt that is marked, but you would have to come here to mark yours.
