hey all, i just picked up an 05 manual legacy gt limited, loving it so far. just wanted to say whats up and i look forward to learning a lot here!
Make sure you pull those screens off the oil feed banjo bolt line!!! Otherwise you are going to be buying a turbo here soon.
hmmmm. what are the benefits of removing it? i am unfamiliar with what you are talking about. i appreciate the help!
There are screens in the hard oil lines that supply the turbo and AVCS. They can get clogged with gunk very easily. You really need to watch your oil level and make sure you don't go much beyond 3000 miles on an oil change with those screens in, or they will get clogged and your turbo will be starved of oil. We replaced my brother's turbo at just over 60k miles due to oil starvation from (his wife ) not watching oil levels or caring much about change intervals, and once we were in there, it was evident that the turbo had ALREADY been swapped out once before, by the previous owner. The screen is very easy to remove, at least the turbo-side screen is. I did not remove the drivers side AVCS oiling screen. His turbo snapped the impeller shaft in half, the compressor and turbine wheels weren't even connected to each other any more. Some pretty nice carnage.
WOW Im on the same boat.. i drive a 05 legacy GT auto... i havent did any of those yet... some help please....
You can just remove them and leave them out. Yup, very easy to do. Here's some instructions: http://www.legacygt.com/forums/showthread.php?t=62371 EDIT: Let me put a disclaimer on here that there's still a ton of controversy on whether you should clean them, whether it's safe to remove them completely, or whether they're the source of failure at all. I'm not advising that everyone should be doing this with an 05+ LGT, but at least you should be aware of the situation and make your own decisions on what route you'd like to take. There is a highly documented wave of turbo failures in 05 LGT's (seen here: http://legacygt.com/forums/showthread.php?t=83047 and here: http://legacygt.com/forums/showthread.php?t=67252 ) but you should definitely be making your own decisions based on the facts at hand.
interesting. i think ill take a look at them and see what they look like and make my decision on whether to remove, clean, or replace upon looking at it. many thanks for the info, if anyone has any more tips, or, things i should do to prolong the longevity of the cars parts, let me know. thanks again.
Great..... I have had my 08' LGT since Sept. 07', first I have heard of this. So is my car (and myself) screwed??? Is it too late? Welcome by the way, nice to see another LGT owner join
Welcome aboard from another 05 LGT owner. I removed the passenger side screen when I swapped in a braided feed line for the turbo and AVCS. Mine was still clean at 52k miles, but I perform maintenance on the car regularly. Regular oil changes with quality oil and filters is essential (duh).
Nope, not anymore. It just ran out about 2 weeks ago. How do I have so many miles on it already you ask? I really like to drive it, alot!
Just so awdimprezal didn't scare all of you, I had a 06 LGT come it about a month ago with 126K on it and had never had a turbo replaced. Every bad legacy turbo we have seen at work seems to be lack a maintenance some where in the cars life. FYI, if I bought a used legacy gt, I would pull the filter out though, if owned from new and oil changes every 3K, I wouldn't be so worried.
Welcome aboard, fellow 05' lgt owner here as well. Never heard of the screen filter removal, very interesting and scary at the smae time. Anyone want to do mine? I'll supply you with home brew and a 12 pack of your choosing. I have my oil changed every 3k miles. I only have about 22k miles on the car right now. Should I be concerned?
Only because you havent owned your car since new, its ultra easy to remove the one @ the turbo. Just unscrew the banjo bolt, its located in the banjo bolt.
Hi from another 05 LGT owner. We need to get all the MN LGTs together sometime. As for the banjo screen, I pulled mine at 50k when I installed an 18g. I ran synthetic since the car was new, with 5k change intervals. My screen was completely clean, but I removed it anyway.
I came across an article talking about the oil screen issue http://store.forcedperformance.net/merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=Info_SubaruOil
Thanks for that article Derek. We definitely will have to get the MN legacy GT's together. just tell me when and where!
I had to remove my turbo to take that banjo bolt screen out, but it's 08 WRX not LGT maybe they are little different.
lgt owner here. car is a 05 with 40k miles. i purchased the car with no maintenance records. im thinking of removing or replacing the filters. lots of info on here: www.legacygt.com
Welcome bud. I have an 05 lgt as well with close to 80k. Still 20k on the warranty, but I have not had any turbo issues. Knock on wood.
extended bumper to bumper warranty? i wanted to ge this, but i need to prove that all the maintenance has been done on the car. are there any sites/ways to find out what service has been preformed? (i aleady checked with carfax)
^Yep that was me. Yeah we should have a LGT meet someday, maybe when its warmer though. Hopefully I'll have that new itsme FMIC installed around end of January, then my perrin TMIC will be for sale.
When the time comes I'd probably take the Perrin off your hands. It would give us a reason to have a meet and you would'nt have to ship. How much?
Yep, the one from legacygt.com. I'm cursious to see how much my MAF g/s goes up with the FMIC vs TMIC, and how much additional timing I'll be able to run. I'm just hoping the stock BPV will work ok, so far its been fine with the 18g at 22psi.
I was reading this and thinking to myself, so does this banjo bolt need to be removed from 08+ WRXs as well. I guess I better replace it asap. My car has 13k miles on it now.
On the mustang dyno at RS Motors, 286whp, E-Tank and another stage2 LGT made about 235whp on the same day. So the 18g gained me about 50whp above the vf40. On airboy dyno I'm right around 300whp, a little more now that the air is cold and dense. I really want to get to brainerd to do a few 1/4 runs next spring. Hoping for mid to high 12's.
20 click works for me. Turn key to on position. 20 full click/unclicks. Turn key to off position. Start car. No more chime. Sounded like a snipe hunt when I first read it, but it works.
With the 20 click chime disable, have any of you had the chime come back on after the temps get really low? I used to disable mine via the 20 clicks but whenever it got really cold it would just reset and the chime would be back? Now that I'm tweaking my tune every time I flash the chime delete goes away. I've learned to just live with it.
