Well Mike continues building his rally car. It is finally back in Buffalo after a lot of work he did at the other shop so I got to see what he has done so far. Here are some pics I took this weekend of the car. http://www.mlgez.com/gallery2/main.php?g2_view=core.ShowItem&g2_itemId=19742 I can not wait to see this thing done. Going to be sweet:woot:
I asked in another thread and nobody answered. Maybe you will. What hydro e-brake kit are you using?? or is it a home build?
He is not checking here much right now, very busy. I will ask him where he got that. I know he ordered it from somewhere.
 that car is SO HAWT! i looks like it is progressing nicely. man i can wait to see this thing again. it was a blast before, and it just got better. That E-Brake is nuts! A taste of things to come??
Which diffs are you using? I love the wheels, wish I had a set when I had my RS. Never did mount up those Pirelli gravel tires to that shell.
Yup its a K-sport hand brake I am currenty using the Stock front Surtrack diff, DCCD centre diff, and R180 rear diff. Some time this year I will upgrade all my diffs. Well time for me to get back to the car. 15 days till I leave for the rally
no i am alittle rusty on STis. do they still use a drum in disc e-brake? if so does teh k-sport ebrake still use the drum in disc design or is it a new setup entirely?
Typically a hydraulic setup like that ignores the cabled stock e-brake system althgether and simply puts pressure to thje rear hydraulic system. I'm sure that's how Mike has it set up, since you'd really want the larger disc and the resultant fade resistance (nad higher braking force) for rally.
^ahh that makes sense. i was kinda confused if it was the same ebrake system. why would you go throught the effort to just use the same crappy drum in disc design. how hard is it to install a hydro ebrake?
Depends. On a typical car, it's a pain in the ass. On a rally car, like Mike's, where all the brake lines have probably been re-routed through the cabin to protect them already, it's not such a big deal. Plus, on a typical car, the right and left rear are on separate loops to prevent losing both in case of a leak, and so would require two hydraylic cylinders, not the one. Only worth it for a race car, really.
You also need to have the right center diff installed to use an e-brake like that otherwise you'll just lock it all up and do some hefty damage to your diff. That's why I was asking him about the diff. I was considering doing the same in my old RS but never did find an economic solution to the diffs. And FWIW the LGT has some sort of seperate hydraulic tie-in to the rear brakes for the e-brake, I'm guessing the STi is running something similar.
i know the STi center diff disengages when the ebrake is applied, and also i believe it disengages when the brakes are applied too. 6spd ftw.
Aye, it looks like he used the DCCD so I'm guessing it was the entire 6MT? Of course when I still had the RS the STi wasn't available here
Yea ^^^ a 2004 STi swap.... that drivetrain keeps jumping cars. I do not have pics of the original swap but I do have it going from the wagon to the current car in a single weekend. http://www.mlgez.com/gallery2/main.php?g2_view=core.ShowItem&g2_itemId=14929
I'm gonna go ahead and bet that he's got it wired to the existing ebrake switch for diff disengagement.
Here are some new photos from last night. Third page (this link) has two new photos and then all new on fourth page. http://www.mlgez.com/gallery2/main.php?g2_view=core.ShowItem&g2_itemId=19742&g2_page=3 Race is coming up real soon.
Well I hoped to get better photos before he left, oh well. Here is what I got yesterday. He left today before I could I could get back to Buffalo. Originals can be found at the link in the previous post.
When he first told me what he planned I was not sure but in person it really looks good. Plus you want your car to stand out when racing. Just wish he had the other wheels on. They are HOT.
thats pretty sweet looking. back looks kinda bare, and i am ot a huge flame fan. but none the less its sweet. should have done reflective silver decals. so you can only see them with a flash/bright light. and no pods yet? and what did he do with his BBSs that were kinda chewed up?
He was working on the pods when I was there. The rings for holding the lights in showed up 2 minutes after I did. Maybe if you look close you can see the mounting studs on the hood.
Hate to say it mike, I liked the blue stripey design of your old car better, thought you were going with that on this one. I guess the closest way to describe the new one is "tribal tattoo"
^^^ that is what it looks like. Was trying to figure a way to describe it. In person I think it looks great. I never got to see the old one.
