I am dumbfounded as to why you painted car lovers as hoons and disrespectful to society.. again your 'indepth' reporting showed the enthusiasts as idiot out to endanger those around them... so what you interviewed a few deadbeats... If you cared to dig deeper you would find a lot of people condone that sort of behaviour and are out there to respect each others hard labor... as always the few bad apples spoil the crop... You should instead do an investigation into why some cars are on the roads... you see MOST enthusiasts take time to upgrade hteir brakes, yes their exhausts are louder but so are Harleys... loud doesnt kill.. no brakes do though... I own an Automotive store and have had a few customers come in with absolutely UNroad-worthy vehicles and yet they drive out again cause they dont want to spend any money to fix them...

not sur eif this works but I have photgraphic proof for evidence in case the customer who declines the work kills someone after leaving our store... this customer had worn their front brakes out so bad the rotor was seperated from the hub... yet he didnt want to pay more than $29.95 for pads... we couldnt have put the pads in cause there wasnt any rotor to hold them in!!! why not do somehting worthwhile with your reporting and show us the real dangers out there on the roads of Minnesota and not some stoopid geeks making all us enthusiasts look bad... with their pathetic stories of doing 80mph in a suburban street.. well my bicycle could too if I had big legs and enough road...

Those rotors are ridiculous. Did the customer actually leave the store with those?!?!?

Yeah but I bet those brakes can get MAD stopping power when one of the vanes catches a chunk of pad (or shoe, caliper, whatever)

That's something similar to what I wrote last year for an free-writing essay. The real dangers on the road are the careless drivers and careless automotive owners.

don't forget soccer mom's on cell phones and dam that rotor got raped....its down to the vents....

anyway, good points on the letter saying that car enthusiasts aren't how they say we are. They really should focus more on the careless car owners than us enthusiasts.

12345, my rex woulda been totalled not that long ago, some soccer mom, on a cell, with a van full of kids, ran a stop light (by a long shot, our light was green for a good 5 seconds) going way over the limit and came within 10 inches of my front bumper. I get so P-ed off by this crap everyday, dumb ass drivers.

    Nice letter, and so true....
I had my most awe inspiring dumb ass manover happen a few weeks ago....
on 312 it goes to 1 lane. Some ass who knows this came flying down the left lane, so I move in to block because I am sick of people slowing down the traffic this way. I did this when they had ample time to slow down.... They drive INTO the ditch to go around.... at speed. almost loses it. and they got 4 cars in ahead of me where it was 1 lane. I realy wanted to follow them home and ask them if it was worth it.

It really isn't just KARE11 either. FOX news is one of the worst for their "shock and awe" stories. The other channels I think are trying this out to see if they can steal some ratings, but it all boils down to some *loser that barely made it through college thinking they are some detective that is going to foil some master plot to take over the world. I really hate the news, and don't even watch it anymore. I have a built-in forecast on my taskbar, so I never need to watch the weather, which is all I watched the news for anyways.

*No offense to anyone here that does reporting for a living, but even you would have to admit it is a little out of control.

last night a toyota pickup lost a wheel in front of me and crashed into the barrier on 94E. This was ten feet in front of me. Idiots who just put gas in a cheap car for 15 years (yes, only changing oil whent he **** thing dies) and have them gradually just fall apart because they're too **** cheap to put $100 a year worth of mainenance into their cars should be jailed for attempted murder.

WE NEED CAR INSPECTIONS. not for emissions, but to make sure people stop driving these deathtraps! where i'm from (DC) the car inspections at least keep these unsafe rust buckets off the roads. I mean the shoulders of the interstates here are littered with exaust pasts, swaybars, linkages, engine parts, brake parts etc. It's scary.

i agree with zach (mostly) i was downtown on friday and i was going to 394 w from washington ave. i was headed for the sane lane ramp but quickly had to dodge out and take the normal on ramp due to a muffler laying in the middle of the road. if i would have it this many BAD things would have happened. (front bumper, oilpan, crossmember would all probably have joined the pipe in the on ramp)this is just stupid that peoples cars are leaving crap all over the roads where any/many people can and do hit it.

counter point to vehichle inspections they have these in japan and they are UBER picky ie sticker on car and stuff liek that can get you fines. here i could just see tons of exhuast and lowering tickets from the inspectors.

that picture of the rotor is EXTREMELY disturbing. what car was that on so i can avoid being near them! you should have told the person that the car was undriveable and shown them a new rotor and show them thier rotor. maybe then they would get the picture.

We inform every customer and show every customer.. this guy we didnt cause he told us to put it back together and came later to pick it up.. we explain why it needed work and had him sign of all the paperwork which takes the responsibility out of our hands.. hey I cant hold a customers car... they are adults and need to start making adult descisions.. even a 8yr old would look and say "that is dangerous isnt it" but morons would rather put themselves, their children and others at risk cause they have tighter arses then fish -WATERTIGHT...

ps... the car wasnt 'undrivable' as he drove it to the store and away form the store... just very SLOWLY.. he he

In regards to the rotor being toast. Yes that probably needed to be replaced during the previous year of driving, but there are cases where people will have their vehicle checked, and do the fixing themselves. Obviously this was not a case of that, since he had his car in to replace the brake pads, which is a 20 minute process if you take your time.

My dad for instance decided to take one of his vehicles in to have it checked out just to see what, if anything was wrong with it. Normally just taking it in for an oil change will trigger all sorts of things that need to be fixed. So he went to pick it up, and the guy told him that basically it was not road worthy, and needed $1500 worth of work. He brought it home, and did all the work himself for 1/3 of the cost. Time is money, but money is money too.

I agree... the reason my wife and I opened this store is because of the dishonesty in this industry... I am a Youth Pastor and an enthusiast... so I wanted to work for myself in a business that is around things I enjoy (cars) and do it with Honesty and Integrity... I cringe when jobs like that ccome in cause then people think exactly what you said... that we are trying to gouge them... But if we take the time and wxplain it to them then the majority of the time they understand that we are doing what NEEDS to be done and not adding little unnecessary add on sales... The guys I have working for me are here for the saem reason... My store manager has been doing this for almost 30yrs and hates the dishoonesty and this is his last harrah in this industry, if we got the wrong direction he will walk.. my other tech came to work here cause he heard my shop manager was involved with it and wanted to work with someone honest... it is hard to find a good shop... but also just as hard to find good customers for the reason you said.. people want to get the estimate... FREE then fix it themselves... doesnt matter that my guys spent almost an hour inspecting your car but you dont want to pay.. try that at the dentist office... end up with no teeth... it works both ways... if the business has integrity then the customers need some too...
