As I come up on my ten year anniversary with the Legacy and 15th with the Camaro, I wondered who else might be a buy them and keep them type of person. With that said, post up about your long-term car relationships. For optimal audience participation let's make the minimum five years.
12 years with the WRB bugeye. 4 years with the RSVX.(and counting) 3 years with the Outback.(and counting) 3 years with the AWP bugeye.(and counting) Happy Anniversary Ricky!
I believe 6 years now of the STi sitting there, I think I've had the R53 for 4 or 5 now. Both are the longest I've ever kept cars.
Little over 6 years with my bugeye and around 11 years with this old beast, which hopefully will finally be getting some attention soon. Been putting all my time into the WRX for too long and she's getting jealous...
Damn, I was not aware you had that car. Very envious now. I'm actually planning/hoping to get a 997 turbo once the kids are a little older, but I'll be nearly 50 by then...
'64 Biscayne, total base model. Don't want to thread-jack so I won't get into it much. Might have to start a thread for it before I really get into working on it.
Sorry, but I gotta cheat. Technically has been "mine" for 4 1/2 years, but it's also one that will stay around forever. Started dating the now wife just over 10 years ago. They had this thing in the yard (parked for several years) and I fell in love at first sight. Long story short, we got the title as a wedding present from her parents. My boss at the time helped me nurse it back to life. Has a 440/727 combo from a 77 New Yorker. Mild cam, Performer RPM intake, but still very tame.
Alright, if you insist. I was aimlessly browsing Craigslist one morning and saw it for sale in the St Paul area, bought it same day for $650 and drove 50 miles to home with no issues. Belonged to an old couple in the Twin Cities since new and ended up in the hands of another older gentleman after they passed, so I believe I'm the 3rd owner. Again, it is a total base model with a straight 6, 3-speed column shift manual, and no radio. Had about 41,000 on the dash when I bought it, which was hard to believe but there were registration records to support it so it very well could be accurate. It came all original, even had the factory spare and owner's manual. Haven't done much with it yet, just added a couple trim pieces to the hood and trunk and a driver's side mirror (and some 80-spoke wheels but that was just because the old tires were blowing out). Haven't driven it in a few years but will get it up and running again soon. Not planning a total restoration because of some rust issues and the upholstery is kind of deteriorating I feel like it would be more trouble and cost than it's worth, just a few things I really want to do with it. Need to patch a couple rust spots on the underside, otherwise leaving the body as is. I have a 2wd '79 Chevy pickup donor vehicle with a 454 and 4-speed auto that I'm planning to transplant, would like to do front disc conversion and air suspension, and a staggered 18/20-inch wheel setup. Something like this Then I'll just give her the Mexican blanket seat treatment, a radio, and she'll be good to go.
Just sold the wrx this fall after 10 years, this will be summer #7 with the corvette and the 66 Malibu has been around since 1998.
I wish! Couldn't afford to keep it/store it. It was literally my first car! Looked like dis... Fiddy is OOOOOOOLLLDDD!
Man, that thing looks clean. Mine is far from it, definitely shows its age. Kind of digging that look now though.
I had my 1998 Toyota RAV4 for 18 years before getting my '17 Limited. It was my trusty (albeit way underpowered) buddy that saw me through highschool, college, dental school, residency, getting married, moving into our townhouse in Blaine, buying my practice, the birth of our two boys, moving into our current house in Fridley, and the purchase of my WRX. I got it new and put all 220k miles on it myself. Even built a set of projector HID headlamps for it from parts sourced off eBay after one side cracked after it got hit in a hit-n-run at a parking lot. The car was a beast in terms of reliability. It never failed to start, never got stuck, and all major parts were still original. Probably helped that I maintained it religiously. Nowhere near as fun to drive as the WRX, but it had a certain charm about it. I ended up donating it after I got my WRX since my wife wouldn't let me keep it due to oil leaks staining the driveway.
My 1998 Outback affectionately known as "Old Whitey" just turned over 230K miles this week. We've enjoyed nine years and 112K together, not without some major repairs but it's been fun trying to keep her going and get every mile I can out of her. She won't win any beauty contests with her rear quarter and rocker panel rust, but she's still my daily driver and goes down the road as good as ever. I'm gunning for 300K, but I'll settle for 250K, lol. I've had my 2009 Legacy GT for five years, still love it and baby it like it's a new car.
I would have to say that coming up on 25 months is probably the longest I have owned any car. So my 15' STi wins! The Mazda 323 was a close second with just barely 2 years, almost to the day, and then my 13' WRX is third with 23 months. To be honest I don't think I have ever kept car beyond the 2 year mark before this one. I have a problem.
I had to do a little research....some of these numbers are surprising. I had my FrankenWagon 2003-2010, 6 years: I've had my '89 XT6 since fall 2008, 8+ years and counting: My '87 4Runner since fall 2006, 10+ years and counting! '84 Brat since spring 2010, that's almost 7 years Looks like I had my '92 Celica for 4.5 years (spring 2010 to fall 2014) Current '91 Celica is 2 years and counting, but I plan to keep it for a long time.
http://subarujusty.proboards.com/thread/1281...only to do this with it I hope. How much fun would this be!!
Back on topic though, my very first vehicle was a '98 S-10 that I got shortly after I got my license in '01. Kept it for 8 years before selling it. Good ole' mini-truckin' days. I so badly wanted to bag this thing, but never got around to it. I had my '03 WRX for just a little over 5 years. Sold it in '13 The next owner didn't keep it quite as clean. RIP Everything else I've owned has been well under 5 years.
