just curious why you would need to drive to chicago for a tune when shane at DB has the capability.

Maybe you are going to GRD?

    here is my thinking:

Shane is a good tuner, has the right resources, is a down to earth guy, and best of all he is local. If I buy a subie next yr and play around with it, I am not driving to chicago for a tune when I have a local that has the capability. With my Z, I have no choice. Noone here tuned unichip when I had it, and now noone tunes Fcon Vpro locally.

I am well aware that the tune is not something to skimp on and the extra time and money spent to get a good tuner working on your car is worth it. That said, what happens when your base map doesn't run all that well and your tuner is in chicago? Suck it up till you have an opportunity to drive down and have them retune?

Maybe it is just my thinking, but I would be working with Shane at DB or whatever local guy that has the capability that you think is best rather than having a tuner 400 miles away.

This is coming from first hand experience with my tuner being 400 miles away and being an outsider looking in at the local subie crowd.

If I get into an STI or legacy next yr, I will get the ball rolling and let shane tune it.

^^ it's definitly inconvienient having jorge so far away.
for me though, it's worth the extra investment in time and money.

I know pope! i'm so stoked! I can't wait to get it all done! I'm reeally excited for the drive on sunday, but as crazy as its sounds i think i'm more excited to let my car go and get played with!! :woot: as soon as matt is done and gives me a date i will plan to go down to P&L probably the following weekend or the weekend after that. So it will be a done with motor, down to tune kinda thing!!! but the only thing i'm gonna be sad about is i'm gonna have then tune it down so that it will be ok for winter! i don't wanna be running in the 4's for winter time!:eek4: Then i gotta drive it nice and gentel ALL winter then when summer comes around!! ITS ON! i'm gonna get a tune hopefully between 400-450 on pump for the summer! Can't wait!

Frankly, after seeing Shane's response and attitude towards cars other than DSMs and the results of a few of his tunes... i won't be letting shane anywhere near my car with a laptop. IMHO...

I am by no means saying Shane is the man. But to be fair, I know of at least one person that isn't completely happy with Jorge's tune on their car. I am not here to badmouth anyone, or say one tuner is better than another. What I am saying is, I just don't feel it is at all necessary to go to the trouble of driving 400 miles for a tune that could be done by a local.

If I have the chance, I would rather give any work I have to a local person/business. that said, I want the work to be done right, and won't hesitate to make the trip if need be. I feel you guys are looking past a potentially great local resource.

And your comment about his attitude......well, personally I have yet to meet a tuner that is as down to earth as shane. As a tuner becomes more established, their preference towards cars becomes more pronounced. they become pickier about the setups they will tune. As I said, I am not saying shane is the man, just that he is one local option I think is being overlooked. DSMs won't be around forever, and with his new environment at DB, I would think he is bit more open to other cars

I am not a newb to this. Based on my experiences with my Z, I feel I have a little ground to stand on

Well then, go to Shane.... I don't get why you are pushing so hard, let people make their own decisions. I personally would drive >400 mi over someone that doesn't have experience. When he has a track record, it will speak for itself.

I see your point Zivman, but until Shane has more experience (Subarus) under his belt it will be hard for people to use him. But again a guy gotta start somewhere. Everyone start out as a pup and sooner or later he becomes the big dog. In my case, I'd rather wait until he gets a little bit bigger more experience and has history with good results for Subaru tuning. Especially the major setups that people are doing...

Not pushing hard. What I see here is a 20 yr old that is taking a leap of faith into a motor build and tune. He doesn't seem too well informed beyond that Eric's car is fast and matt did the work. I have seen Eric's car and matt does a great job. He has great attention to detail.

I am an outsider looking in, more specifically a know-nothing pathetic farmer looking in, and based on what I heard through the grapevines, he would be no worse off having a local tune his car vs having jorge tune it - and he won't have to drive 400 miles each way. Based on personal experience, I am not driving 400 miles for a tune unless I am forced to.

I am not here to badmouth anyone like I said. You all are free to have whoever tune your car and wish you all the best of luck.

That said, read this post and you tell me how well informed the OP is:
Maybe it is just me, but I can look back when I was 20 yrs old and see how much I thought I knew about things. Seriously, building a 400+ hp car and and driving it in the winter? Maybe I am completely wrong in my assumptions, but maybe not.

Just for my reference, is this car being street tuned or load based dyno tuned?

I am not saying shane is the guy of choice. just saying that there are local options. Think about the shops that sprung up here in MN in that last 5 yrs. 5 yrs ago, we basically had elite and a dynojet that is next to impossible to tune on. Now we have RS with a load based mustang. LSE with AWD DD, DB with an AWD DD, Full blown motors with a 2wd DD.

I think it is in everyone's best interest to work with local shops if we have the opportunity. I for one am sick of traveling 400 miles for my car to get tuned and such and would love to have a local place I could go to. Unfortunately for my current setup, I don't think that will be the case in the near future.

Of course, we also fly in Jorge and have him tune here. I have the protuner software to tune ap's, and I can tune utec, but once I get my setup up and running I would probably even have Jorge take a crack at my car. The seat time that he has tuning is worth more than the plane ticket to get him up here (or drive down there). I have also seen other tuners come into town and after watching what they do, Jorge is a good tuner. As far as I am concerened, there is a BIG difference in putting down a number and making a fun driveable car. You will also need a tuner that can get what you want out of the car. Now, like I have said before. If I was to built a car that all I was looking for was a number, I don't think Jorge would be the guy, but since I am not into that kinda of setup Jorge fits the bill for what I am looking for.

I'm not just shooting for a number for my car! All i am saying about getting it tuned and putting numbers to it is that i will have Jorge tune my car way down from its full potential for the winter then whoever i have tune it in the spring i will push more twards the full potential! I was just using numbers as a reference saying for the winter it will be tuned mildly then for the summer i would like to have it pushed A LOT harder. I know i don't know much about tuning but what i do know is experience is priceless. and i'm not saying that shane doesn't have any experience i'm just saying that i'd rather have someone who i know has lots of experience with subie's do it! thats all and the drive for me is no problem at all. i need a vacation and i think it will be fun.
