I'm looking at getting an HDTV. Finally, I know.

    What I'm looking for:
    1080p +
    120 hz
    40-50"
    and definitely under a grand.

    Post up your recommendations please.

    Thank you.

I like my samsung and samsungs customer service was very good when my old 50 died 6months after getting it. It was only a 720p and when it died they replaced it fro free and gave me a 1080p model

I have also heard great things about Sharp's AQUOS line. Have you seen my VISIO tv? We paid 1800 for it, 55" LCD 240Hz. I'm guessing they'd make a model with similar specs, in smaller sizes, for under a 1000.

Jason, I'm actually looking at a VIZIO SV420M. Walmart has it for $678. So far its at the top of the list. How do you like yours? Any problems?

I bought a 46 inch samsung 1080p 120hz like a year ago. If I could go back I'd buy the 60hz model I think the 120hz makes stuff look like it's moving funny. Atleast I can turn it off but still the 60hz was way cheaper.

I got my 42 vizio 240hz 1080 50,000 contrast yadayadayada at SAMs club on sale for just under 700$. It was a Superbowl sale and a model close out deal. Otherwise I think they were around 1100$. I really like it so far.

Add us to the list of satisfied vizio owners. We bought some sorta xvt something or another, all I know is its 47", 120hz, 1080p but when we bought it I think we paid 1300ish at costco but that was last year.

This place will make your head spin with information. Lots of very knowledgeable people here. Sometimes too much information...paralyzed me with indecision for months until I decided upon a Sony 55EX500 (sorry, but not under $1000).

You can turn that off. I think it makes stuff move funny too, so I have it turned off. I'm not sure why they think that's some great feature.

Not a single problem what so ever. The 120/240hz thing does make things wierd but it is really meant for action movies and sports and whatnot. For regular shows and movies, it can be nausiating. But you get used to it, and it is great if you have a video card that can pump out the frames for games. We were playing GTA4 on it last night and it doesn't miss a beat. And TF2 and L4D are stunning on it. Seriously, this is the best TV purchase I've made.

Also, I typed both this message and that message above from 10' away using the Visio monitor. Steph uses it almost exclusively as her daytime PC

The Visios have good bang for the buck, but I've seen a couple start failing after about a year. Sitting here at work (Hooray for being on call on Holidays!) I've got a couple of them sitting about 12 feet from me (a 46 and a 55) and both have been working for a long time, with no problems issues, however.

the thing about the Visio TVs and the other low-cost units is that they're basically disposable. Anything breaks on it, and you might as well throw it away because they're completely integrated and don't have replaceable modules. It makes things cost less.

Me, if I'm dropping that kind of money, I'm going to spend a little bit more for something I know I won't end up throwing out after 1-2 years. I've got a networked Sony Bravia 46" that was about $1300 along with a Blu-ray player and 6.1 HT (tossed the speakers, and it's actually pretty good powering my B&Ws).

You should be able to find a decent Sony or Samsung under $1k.

I love my Samsung 42" LCD 120hz, I think the model was something like LN426xxx. Great TV, no issues, and its got to be under 1k these days. I think I would go with a Bravia if I had to do it again though, we got one at work recently and I am kinda falling in love with it.

The 120hz is great for gaming and sports, just make sure your new TV can rock the 24hz 1080p mode for blueray if youre going that route. (I dont know if thats standard or what these days, but it makes the movies look like youre actually on the set watching from behind the scenes!)

PLASMA!!! Seriously, go watch any sports event on a 60-120hz lcd, and you will see the diff right away. amazing viewing angle. We purchased a 50' samsung not to long ago and love it. Compared to our other two lcd's they dont come close. Glare is not an issue, and the tv has many anti burn in technologies, we have left movies on pause, watched tv with all sorts of side bars and there is not a single burn in on the screen.

I just got a 55" that I purchased from Newegg. Check them before you pull the trigger on whatever you decide.

I had two plasma Pannys that both failed big time. First one 4 days out of the box and its replacement 18 months later (different problems). Bought the extended warranty after the first one failed and I am glad I did. This was back in 2006. Every manufacturer puts out a dud every once in awhile. I went with Panasonic back then because everything I bought that Panasonic made worked forever and everything I had with the name Sony on it had some sort of an issue (this is over a 30-plus year time span). When I bought the Sony 55EX500, I again bought an extended warranty. Best Buy had just had a $200 temporary, unadvertised price drop and that just about covered the whole warranty price.

I'm sure they all have their issues from time to time. I have not had any problems with either of mine. I have had the 42 for 3 years and the 50 for a little over a year, my Dad also has the same 50 and loves it.

I have a 46" Samsung LCD 60Hz, I don't game on it, thats what my PC is for. When I bought it last year it was about $800 and has the internets and such on it, but my samsung blu ray has that also so it seems a little unnecessary to have it on both. I do really like it though, and it was significantly cheaper than the 120hz at the time.

When I was doing the plasma vs LCD debate, the deal breaker on plasma was glare (living room is very sunny). No matter how much anti-glare jibber jabber they talked about, in a sunny area all the plasma's on the wall at the store had glare. I had to get up early in the morning to get there when the sun was at the right angle, and then it was obvious.

So I ended up getting an LG 42" 550 series TV. Internet connected and everything with 150K:1 contrast ratio. Love it!

Just bought a Samsung C650 series for my new place. Arrives Wednesday, hopefully it'll be a good fit :).
