I need to tote about 10 gallons of Minnesota's finest e85 down to Iowa when I go down for tuning in a week and looking to invest in some decent 5 gallon capacity fuel jugs. My first thought was the VP square jugs, as I commonly see them used, but there are some reviews on Amazon that say the caps are garbage and leak as you're filling so I'm a bit apprehensive to buy two of them. Anyone have personal experience with them or recommend a similar style jug of a different brand? Scribner, VP, Jegs, Sunoco, LC2, other?
I have a round VP jug that I absolutely love. Never had an issue with the cap leaking. I carry it in the back of my Jeep when wheeling and haven't had an issue yet. I wouldn't hesitate to pick up some more.
My hope is that the few poor Amazon reviews is due mostly to user error. I ordered two shortly after starting this thread lol. Hoping I have good luck with them.
I have used VP and Jazz (same jugs/caps) and the only time I have ever had gas leak out is if I forgot to tighten up the air relief valve. I have gone through 5-6 of them in the last 25 years. Russ
First time using mine i had the air relief a little too loos and poured a little too over-zealously and made a bit of a mess
I've seen a few with leaky caps, something about the way the mouth of the jug is cut prevents it from sealing against the o-ring in the cap. I was going to suggest buying local, but that's probably tougher in Austin than in the cities.
I have a Scribner, and it's served me well for years. https://www.pegasusautoracing.com/productselection.asp?Product=2558
Yeah definitely nothing local like that around here unfortunately. Someone suggested taking an orbital sander to the top/mouth of the jug to flatten the part that seals against the o-ring in the cap. Seems logical and if I have any problems with leaking I'll try this first.
I've got 4 of the Jeg's brand jugs and all but 1 of the caps have eventually cracked along the casting lines. Granted, they've been stored for extended periods of time with fuel in them and the nozzle apparatus was modified, putting a bit more lateral strain on the outlet. In the event you damage a cap, they are relatively inexpensive to replace with new.
