Since its less than 2 weeks away, I thought we'd better start a "Who's going when thread" for those who are caravaning. Wednesday Thursday morning banner crew meet at McDonalds off of I-35 S. of Duluth at 8 a.m. (http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&ie=UTF8&ll=46.725573,-92.219453&spn=0.002353,0.00854&t=h&z=17) Amy Thursday after work crew Josh Dave Sheen Alexis John Dan Friday Mark H. Post up and we'll fill in some blanks.
I'm in the one-man drive from Mpls at about 9pm Thu to Iron River, MI about 2am, then up to stage 5 on Fri afternoon crew. Unless that changes . . .
Josh won't be online much, so I'll speak for him. He's leaving after work Thursday (fergus falls), so we're figuring out if he'll have time to drive back down to the cities, or if he should shoot over east and meet us on our way up. He did get a room reserved tho.
I am excited to check out Friday's roads. Apparently, no more Bob or F'd Up Lake. I know a certain Mustang pilot will be pleased to hear that. Sounds like they are going back to a few roads used in the past, including a supposedly more Mustang friendly Camp 18? Anyway, I'm sure we'll all cross paths, someone has to be sober cab With Kevin we can have two!
Woo-hoo! First time they've run Beacon Hill, SS2, since about 1999 or so, IIRC. Fast, twisty stuff. For years that was the first stage of the rally. Menge Creek is back on as well, SS9. Too bad there's no spectating on that stage. You used to be able to walk in about a half-mile from the end, however a new house was built there a few years back and the stage was shortened by about a mile and a half. They also put railings on the one-lane bridges in 2000 after an RX-7 missed the corner and landed nose-first on the bank of the creek. From www.specialstage.com: 1: Green Acres (Gravel Pit) 2. Beacon Hill 3. Camp 18 (Although a slightly more Mustang friendly configuration than last run in 1994. ) 4/6 Passmore 5/7 Far Point 8. Herman 9. Menge Creek Saturday is the same as last year. Gratiot Lake was shortened at the north end and won't affect the normal spectator spot. Only 31 cars entered so far. Pinker, Foust, Pastrana, Block, and ACP have yet to enter with less than two weeks to go. Must be a psyche game going on... Not sure when I'm headed up yet, but I'm at the Downtowner for all three nights. Jerry
Looks like I'll be traveling on Friday now. My first stage to work isn't until late afternoon (for me to get there, a couple hours ahead of the actual running), so I might as well get a good night's sleep at home before I go rushing off.
So.....which is the fastest way up and easiest? I've mapquested 3 different ways and they all seem to be about the same.
I35 north to US-2 east to M-28 to US-45 to M-26 is my preferred route, but it is slower. But I'll probably take the I94->29->51->8 route trhough Wi on Friday to minimize my travel time.
I used to drive up there 5-6 times a year from the Cities and The I-35/US-2 route was always faster after the construction finished up on US-2 outside of Iron River. Not to mention there seem to be a lot less troopers on US-2 than 94/29. I've even taken 8 all the way across to 45 and that wasn't too slow, it just seems it because of all the hamlets you have to slow down for. I have settled on the route through Duluth. Aside from Lake Superior Brewing Co. mentioned above there is also South Shore Brewing in Ashland.
Yes!!! I have a buddy that works there as a bar tender. I'm heading up there tomorrow for the day so I'll do some scouting and try to see what special brews they've whipped up for the fall
Anybody have a seat on the way up and a floor i could borrow? I'd like to try to make it up to this, but don't really want to drive up and get a room by myself.
i remember the video of you in the woods along at night. YOU'RE what's creepy out in the woods. :ugh: haha!!! and yeah, 94 through WI is fail. that's how i drive home, and it is the biggest snooze of a drive. but it's up to you dan. i'm just the co-driver
you ain't seen nothing yet missy:naughty: and just cause I went Bear Grylls type crazy on stage 5 doesn't mean I'm wierd:biggrin::laugh:
dave + stump = deliverance 2 in the making. man vs wild... man vs sheen's butt.... same thing, really. hahaha!
I know we discussed it at the rallyx but my car will officially be full. As far as the motel that is up to the whole group. I'm cool with it but we would all need to OK it.
The route throu WI got a lot faster when the rebuilding of 29 finished. It's a divided freeway now and the flow of traffic is usually 75-80 eek4: Yes, 75-80 in WI!)
this is true - i was just on it a few weeks ago to go see a friend in wausau. you can pretty much fly - all open roads, no places for cops to hide, and not much traffic.
Sweet. Worst case, I just drive up myself. It's not all that expensive, really. Specially with the N/A. Where are you staying? PM with details, if you'd like.
Oh I know, I have family that lives a little south of 29 in Marshfield so I use that route to visit them instead of using US-10. Unless it's changed since last spring it was still slower for me to take that route instead of US-2. The difference isn't much, I think I clocked US-2 at about 30 minutes quicker? I wonder if it has to do with our location in the Cities. I lived in Nowthen and would cut due east across the county to I-35 at the Wyoming exit so getting to I-94 would be heading the wrong way. Even if the route on 29 were 30 minutes faster for me I think I'd still take US-2 just because the route is much more scenic and I stop at a few locations which I've noted in this thread
Amy, if I end up driving up there myself I may just leave thursday morning. If you need help bannering, I'm sure I could make duluth by 8.
Check the link in the first post for where I plan to be at 8 a.m. I always stop for gas at the station next to the McDonalds. PM me your # in case I'm running late. I still have a bed open in my room at the Super 8 if anyone wants to share a room. My codriver, Jason, is going to stay at his Frat house so you get a bed to yourself. Amy
