I was going to come up with some long, witty, heavily sarcastic monologue to describe the concept of road rallying and then provide some details about the upcoming "Lucas Flamethrower Rally" on the 19th. Quite frankly I don't feel like putting that much effort in to it, so I'm going with the direct approach instead:

    What is it?
This event is a road rally. I should point out what this event isn't. It is NOT a performance stage rally. The object is not to go as fast as you can.

This will be a straight forward touring road rally wherein you are given a set of numbered route instructions with official mileage for each instruction. Along the way, the instructions will direct you to maintain a given average speed. The goal is to execute all of the instructions while precisely maintaining average speeds throughout the entire course.

If you do this, you will arrive at undisclosed checkpoints at exactly the right time. If you don't, then you will arrive either early or late and you will be given points. The object is to score the least amount of points possible (think golf), with a perfect score being 0.

It amounts to an opportunity to take your car out on some fun roads for a competitive event that is unlikely to end in tow hooks and tears.

Also, here is a an excerpt from their flier:
Do I get to go fast?
Average speeds are usually near the posted speed limit. Sound boring? Remember that driving a low maintenance gravel road is a different experience in the middle of July compared to deep winter. The Lucas Flamethrower Rally is described as a "brisk" gravel rally.

Alright, sounds interesting, how do I get started?
The short of it is show up and register. Here are the details:

Registration is $25 and takes place 3:30-4:00 @ GodFathers Pizza in "The Pottery", Red Wing, MN. First car out is 4:30, anticipated end time is somewhere around 9:30.

Forgot to mention one of the main points of bringing it up... If folks are interested, it might nice to do a lunch/caravan down to Redwing.

    SurlyOldManMN,

Wish I could make this one as I'm guessing the roads will be similar to the one I did up north (Awesome). Alas, it is my birthday that weekend and I have other obligations.

Have fun and bring back some good photos/videos if you can! If you're at the Ice Driving Event this weekend please feel free to say hello.

    Regards,

    Dylan

Didn't even know about this until now, but I guess it wouldn't have made a difference since I work all day on Saturdays.

I've been interested in trying one of these for awhile. Let us know the next time they have another one.
