That really depends on what you want to do with it, the new apples are great, but I wouldn't bother unless you do video or graphics editing. are you looking for a desktop or laptop?
Buy a PC: Cheaper Does everything you need it to do for basic use Cheaper Can run just about every program on the market (aside from stupid mac programs, which are usually replaceable by a PC compatible alternative anyway....which likely costs less) Tons of accessories and support available Cheaper You could likely build one yourself that will rival just about any pre-assembled computer or Mac on the market....for cheaper No need to subscribe to some self-fellating, smug "lifestyle' that is part of Apple marketing (It's a computer, it performs a task, it doesn't make you cool or hip.) Cheaper Also, they are cheaper.
And the "Macs are better for graphics and stuff" point is null and void. Photoshop runs perfectly on the PC platform...as it has since its creation. And there are numerous video editing softwares that will do exactly what a Mac can do...and EVERY Adobe product runs EXACTLY the same on a PC as it does on a Mac. No reason to pay a ton more for the ability to do something that the other option does exactly the same.
The reasons im getting a new comp is because 1) i was looking for a new BCS and the link I clicked was a virus 2) its just old heavy and cumbersome to take to school and back. How do I protect against internetz HIV
1. Buy a decent anti-virus package. 2. Keep up to date with patches. It's not rocket science. Stuart.
There are some good free anti-virus programs out there. AVG and Avast come to mind. I'd also recommend getting some anti-spyware application too. Something like Spyware Terminator. Or even using Microsoft Defender would work. It's always smart to not click or download suspect applications and programs from websites that you don't really know or that look shady.
I think adobe stuff on macs is actually slower in a lot of cases because they don't run natively on mac-intels yet (unless they've fixed that recently). And macs are just as susceptible to viruses as pcs, the only saving grace they have had so far is the fact that most hackers (or whatever the jackasses who create viruses call themselves) don't generally bother writing them due to the fact that there has historically been very few people who actually bought the damn things. I guarantee the more popular macs get, the more attacks they'll get. Like stooo said, anti-virus software and updates are all you ever need for 99.999% of the case, the other .001% is the users fault. I've been considering buying macbook though, I just haven't really seen anything too dramatically great about them yet that makes it worth it. I have my gripes with windows at times, but my girlfriend definitely has her gripes with macs. I'm just most comfortable with windows and I think that's major deciding factor of using ANY modern OS in todays day and age. my 2¢
Actually, not so much. Pre-Vista Windows runs everything by default as an admin. Mac OSX+ is unix based, as as so, only runs commands through super user when prompted and authenticated. Try running a Windows box as user, you'll hardly ever get a virus. With that said, I agree with Readymix's post. Get a PC, pretty much just because they're cheaper.
Laptop? Get a Dell. They make great computers for very very reasonable prices. I've had 3 Dell Laptops so far, and each one of them was great. The only gripe I've had with one of them is that the touchpad failed, but that isn't a Dell specific issue. And it took 3 years of constant abuse at work for it to fail. I just recently traded my Dell 600 in for a 620. It is more of a business machine, but they do offer a 620 with a nice Nvidia graphics chipset and Intel Core2Duo CPUs are standard. That would be more than enough laptop for pretty much anything you'd need.
I would steer clear of Windows Vista unless you get 2 GB of memory. You can run Windows XP on a Mac if you want with Bootcamp so you can retain some of your Windows programs if desired. I recommend Dells to my clients but recommend getting the extended warranty - 3 years. Dell & Windows XP would be my recommendation for a cheap laptop. If you want more info PM me.
VTECH lol PC's are pretty good, especially for everyday use over a Mac. But then again, that's my opinion, I use more applications that are PC based than Mac
funny cause they even sell antivirus for the macs... I have both a 17in hp paillion and macbook... I like both..... more comfortable on the pc... but like the mac for certain other things... each has its pros and cons....
the only other thing I hated about the mac was it cost me as much as my 17 inch hp pavilion and it has like a 1.4 of the storage and half the memory and its 15 inch
I like my powerbook. It's intuitive, easy to use, easy to search. The way the mac functions just makes my work processes easier. You can have multiple programs open at the same time without it slowing down like my pc did. No viruses or pop-ups either. But, I'm in the design field of work so, I'm probably biased. Cheaper is better if all you need is to do homework and search the web.
Werd. Also, the PC community is less likely to try and brainwash you into being another one of their marketing tools.
I work with computers everyday. I am an ITS consultant at Hamline University. 90% if the computers i see are PC, most of the problems with them are is spyware, viruses and outdated windoes updates and anti-virus. I own a mac, i have not had a single problem with it in 3 years. No spyware, no viruses, and i dont have any anti-virus. i have never had my mac freeze on me or do anything stupid. At my school for PC we have very high security measures for PC's like you have to have a certain type of anti-virus and have to have a Sisco Clean Access software that checks for any worms and spyware on your computer. For Macs nothing, you turn it on and it works no updates that take hours no anti-virus that is 100+ dollars. And with new macs you have an option to have windows. Another advantage of having a Mac if anything breaks on it you bring it to apple store and they fix it for free within a few days. If you have another lap top or desk top you have to call the company and if its a hardware issue you either send it out and wait for ever or you get a part and pay a lot of money to have someone install it for you. To be honest i dont understand why people even by PC's if the only reason the have a computer is internet and word processing. And the price on macs is pretty good now. You get a duel core prosessor for under a 1k with everything you need even a built in web cam.
Built in web cam? No. If there was one thing I wished I could eliminate from the internet, it would be cam-whores. You can get a dual core processor laptop for under 700 bucks from Dell. And the reason why they don't have much anti-virus software for Macs is because nobody gives a damn about Macs since there are so few of them. Plus, who wants to send Mac users porn emails? Everybody knows Mac users only masturbate to Steve Jobs press releases. People buy PCs for internet and word processing because you can pick up a PC for cheaper than a Mac.
LOL! QFT! Either is fine really. Macs are going to be more expensive, but I think they're probably better looking if that's important to you. Apple products are very trendy right now. I've never personally had a Mac crash on me, although I'll say that my Dell laptop never really crashes on me either. *shrug*
heres my analogy(ha) ---Macs are like watches..they are very precise mechanisms..they are little machines...they are solid...and they are either working or not..no half ass, its 100% all the time or 0%-----------------------a PC is like a living organism...its starts off kicking early in life, the thing is quick and nimble, then it eats something bad(fastfood) and slows down over its life span, somedays it wakes up happy and roaring...somedays its sad and depressed and moves slower than dead people..only operating at 50%... it gets sick, you need to constantly nurture it....and when it dies its always catastrophic and un-expected....plus when you delete stuff on a mac ITS ACTUALLY DELETED....i'm writing this from a pc, but i work with macs
I'm not a huge fan of this HP laptop I'm using. Vista is annoying, and this computer likes to freeze up a lot. Battery life sucks, and the wirelss internet finder acts retarded usually.
First thing you need to do with your computer is disable 3rd party wi-fi finder they are usualy junk, just use windows wi-fi manager. Second, go to run command promt( on vista its hidden, you have to got to strat--> search and there put run and the command promt will come up) type in msconfig and got to start up, disable most of the proggrams there. They are all the prog. that start up right when you turn your pc on, i bet 90% you dont uses everytime you start your PC. This will make your PC turn on 10 times faster and will save on the battery life. Make sure your Blue Tooth is of too. Vista sucks, i see vista PC every day and they are worhless. Good luck.
<--- doesn't run any anti-virus crap (online virii scans ftw) and has only gotten one instance of computer aids EVER. Basically if you aren't a moron and run a good firewall, you should be ok.
You make me nervous lol. I think I made a great choice I liked the display and styling plus I've had good luck with HP in the past.
One thing about HP's in particular, is that you'll need to trim a lot of "baby fat" out of the OS right away. HP is notorious for putting a lot of redundant software in the machine that Windows is already doing for you. Let me know if you want it shaved down a bit. That goes for you too, Saabaru.
anytime someone brings me a pc fresh out the box, boom, wipe it down for them and reload an OEM version of the OS they had on without all that crap LOL Saves memory and space
