Something new to try. We are getting a pretty large crew of members with cameras. Idea is to have a new photo challenge every week. The person that wins the challenge, will determine the next challenge and will judge the pictures. The rules: 1 - Contest will go from Sunday to Sunday. (will start today for this week) 2 - Only first entry allowed for contest, but can add more. 3 - MUST be YOUR picture. 4 - Who ever wins the challenge, must have new challenge started by Monday afternoon. 5 - Any kinda of PP work is allowed 6 - Must also follow forum rules. (no nsfw, swearing, etc) This Weeks Challenge is "HOT". This is open to what you think is hot. Couple of examples. Russ
I suggest one more rule in an effort to get people to shoot more (maily myself) - Photo must be taken during the week of the contest.
Great idea Russ! a couple things: I would make it monthly or 2 per month instead of weekly. even on bigger forums it's hard to keep contests running every week with a good quantity of entries. my other suggestion is to have all pics be emailed to whoever runs the contest and have them post all entries at once in a poll instead of having the winner be the only judge. I think contests turn out better when you don't see what your competition is doing until the actual judging/voting occurs.
i agree with carl. id be totally down for this contest if it were a monthly. that way it gives the photographers a better chance to get the "one shot" for the contest. and more people will have time to vote.
I think we will run it this way a couple of times, and if we can't keep the support going, we can change it around. A couple of the sites I am on, this works out pretty good. Since you can use any of your stock photos, we should be able to keep it rolling. Once we start e-mailing pictures and setting up polls and such, that adds alot of extra time. This keeps it pretty simple, and it is up to the judge to determine which one they like best. With the subject being so open, there might not really be a right/good or wrong/bad photo. Everyone will be able to tie the theme to something. Russ
We can try it this way and see how it goes. However, I guess I have some fundamental differences with how some of it should be run. 1. no pictures that were taken before the topic was assigned should be allowed (imo photo contests should be modelled after a school assignment: you receive a paper to write, you find resources, you form a thesis, you make an outline, you write and edit, you submit by the due date. you don't find a paper you wrote last year, change the date and turn it in). 2. photos should be voted on by the peer base and not chosen by the previous winner (too much bias in having one judge. I know I shoot in a certain style and I prefer a certain style. if pic a and pic b both feature strong composition, spot on lighting, interesting subject, etc. I will always choose the one which more closely matches the style I prefer. So conceivably, two or three people with similar styles and tastes could pass the win around each week even though there are other photos that could be considered as good or better - I know voting doesn't totally eliminate this effect but it helps) 3. if 2 is implemented, all photos should be anonymous during voting. if we do keep it as submit openly in a thread, at least make the thread "submissions only" and no discussion. it's too easy to lose track of who shot what in a 6 page thread of mostly text and a few submissions
I agree with carl cause I dont wanna know what the "or else" is lol jk..but yea as someone who does these contests on other sites things like these need to be implemented.
or else I'll beat you at rallyx and won't let you use my truck lol anyway, do it how you want russ. if it works, it works. if it doesn't, adjustments can be made
Well, MNSubaru = hand raisers and people who can't follow though. I was trying to make it real easy to keep this rolling since about 10 people in the whole site can commit to something. But since everyone thinks this is fail, screw it someone else can run it. I just wanted to keep it as simple and as open as possible so everyone the has a camera (from the point and shoot to the 3k+ monsters some of us have) can play along. Russ
Don't worry! Be happy! Let's give Russ's way a try and if it doesn't work out, we can change it! Russ, you're the first one in charge and you're picking the winning pic (if that's alright with you). Soooo... GO! yay!
It was a very good idea. I would like to have this contest (w/ or w/o the current rules). I didnt place an entry because it was too hard. Setting the topic to hot when everything is cold and dieing outside was tough for me.
I like this thread. But with the changing weather, why not change the theme to "COLD" for this week we should be able to get some good pictures up
yea! make set-in-stone rules make a thread, delete this one, transfer the pictures and this idea will be on its way! or make this the discussion thread so the pictures dont get lost in the mnsubaru nonsensey jibberish (yea i know nonsensey isnt a word but for !n+rrAN3+z sake why not!)
If someone wants to run with it, go for it. Between the hate in this post, and the pm hate, I said screw it. I was just trying to keep things simple to get more people involved. Most didn't see it that way. Russ
nooo! the pessimism! please dont give up im not a photographer at all but i love the work of others and enjoy seeing something other than cars once in a while and plus you have the power to add delete re configure threads, posts and pics
Since i'm not photographer i'll be a neutral ground on making this MNSOC Weekly Photo Contest Monthly or Weekly
Bielke, Monthly. Are you running it or am I? I will run it- but it will be a bit of a learning curve for me, I've never made a poll before. It will be like COTM, but POTM instead. This is an awesome idea.
