This is what I'm afraid of, too. But.... TECHNICALLY.... it was an MRS. I really hope the Subaru counterpart isn't stupidified.
Technically the concept was pitched as an MRS, too many people took offense to their "MR" (aka Mister) now being a "MRS" (Misses). So they technically released it as an MR2 Spyder. Might as well have been the MRS, since they don't have balls either.
160 hp? Im willing to be that its going to be turbo-less at this point. The 02-05 2.5rs is about 165bhp, right? No turbo, sorry folks.
I will substitute power for less weight any day of the week. Power can be easily gained, weight is not easily shed. If it looks anything like the rendering, which unfortunatly it likely won't, I will be purchasing it.
So...they decided not to do the direct injection then? Realize that the car, if still within 1200kg is around 500 lb. lighter then the current Impreza and lighter then the old gen Impreza. 160hp will go a good ways with a light chassis. It still could use the 200hp though, but it looks like that might wait a year or two. Maybe they decided to hold off investing higher end technology into a car they're not yet sure will sell. Maybe they sort of want a test run before giving the higher end options. For example, there has been a bit of talk about the chassis supporting an awd drivetrain. I assume Subaru wants this to transition readily into WRC. Unfortunately, I have no clue what they're thinking about for the consumer sector. It may simply depend upon sales. If the sales are good, they may start adding the trick gear.
I agree with that statement. However, What market are they going for with a subaru based toyota with no power?
Yes, I know this. At first they were planning on a Direct Injection 2.0 Subaru block with a turbo. That would be an absolute blast. BUT, I'll still probably lust after one with only 160 hp. Power adders will be put on that car.
If its only 160 hp but still turbo it wont take much to make more power...if its n/a, well good luck. N/a bolt ons are a joke, unless we are talking V8 here.
I think there will be much potential here, and my guess is in later mod years it will be available in an STI trim. think 02-03 wrx, in 04 introduced the dtm STi.... prolly something like this.
dont forget about the stellar 93 impreza debut. 1.8 liters of japanese fury cranking out a killer 110 hp! the US always gets a very tame car first.
Yes, and at that time they did have the, what, 235hp and they only brought over half that? Yeah, pretty lame USA debut.
I've heard they're using a Toyota diff, because "the Subaru one won't hold up to power." But, well, whatever, if they're only using 160HP.
that is funny!... I would like to know if this wounder diff from toyota will be using suby axcels, or some new fandangled toyobaru stuffs. I thought the whole of the drive train and suspension was to be suby developed.
Quick update today... http://jalopnik.com/5375233/toyota-ft+86-concept-behold-the-new-ae86?skyline=true&s=i
Yes, I will most assuredly be contemplating trading my WRX in for one of these--And yes, in the RWD trim.
pretty interesting. I dont really care if it comes w/ 160hp or 10 hp; NA or Turbo because as long as the tranny will mate to an EJ series motor..... [cough] EJ257 [/cough] The concept is kind of interesting, it looks like a toyota. The rear bumper reminds me of a Z though. The seats look like plastic deck chairs, the gauge cluster could be cool. There appears to be lots of buttons and lights on the gauge cluster. I also noticed the ABS button down by the shifter, which could add extra fun for those unwilling to pull a fuse. I hope that the ABS system can be dissabbled like in a Subaru and not like in a mercedes.
I doubt the production model seats are gonna look like that...this thing is still purely a concept car...sick nonetheless.
It does look great in that design. I certainly hope it mates up to an ej engine, that thing would be a beast with a 257, or even a 205 in simple rex trim.
i remember hearing along time ago they were going to market the toyota version in japan and the subaru version here in the US. anyone else hear that same speculation?
^ I recall that same speculation. I also recall hearing that Subaru was going to offer an optional AWD version. The rough driveline they were using involved using the subaru D/R 5spd tranny from europe w/ the front axles removed.
yeah, i doubt the Kangaroos style zipper pockets wont be in the production model either. this little toyota could be the ultimate max attack rally car.
