Yea I know this is a Subaru Forum but hey, mnsbr and cbrforum administrators are taking their sweet time with setting up my accounts. A couple of questions here. Does anyone know how to put this spring back on for the choke plate? Also I took the chain cover off from the front bracket and saw this mess. Can I clean this with engine degrease or should I just leave it alone? Any help would be appreciated!
Wow, how long have you had this bike? The spring I have no idea about, I cant tell what is supposed to be what there. On the sprocket, lot of rust there, that chain isn't doing you any favors. Yes clean the snot out of that area, you're going to have to use something pretty strong like gasoline. That chain lube is sticky stuff. It looks like there is an oil leak and you can only find that once the area is really clean, oil creeps and blows around on bikes. I would also check your chain, the real way to check it is to try and pull it away from the rear sprocket. If you're facing the sprocket try to pull the chain away at the 3 o'clock position. If it pull off more than a half way your chain is toast.
Thanks for the help Black_Peter! I'll go grab some engine foam cleaner and try that later on after work. Has anyone tried the pickle chain cleaner? I remember reading it somewhere.
You probably want to get a new chain, and since you do, spray the HELL out of that area with brake or throttle body cleaner. as for the spring, I dont know what it used to look like so I cant help you much in that area.
Ok I got the carbs on and no start. The battery started to die out with me trying to so start it so many times. Read some where that I need to prime the carbs. How do I do that?
New motorcycles have nanny fuel switches.. They are vacuum operated. The idea is that there is enough gas in the carbs to start the bike, thus creating vacuum to keep the fuel switch open. Most bikes cant make enough vacuum off the starter to open them.. Your fuel switch might have a "prime" position. Like :ON- RES- PRM If not you have to find the vacuum line that runs to the switch, and suck on it. (yeah, try doing it on the side of the road!) Or somehow get some gas (turkey baster?) into the line after the fuel switch.. What kind of bike is this?? In my day we turned off our gas tanks. We didn't need some guy out in Japan telling us we were too stupid to do it.. <grumble> I suspect one day some bonehead with leaky carbs left the gas on, the carbs leaked all over the garage and he walked in said "Hmm I smell gas" and lit up a cigarette. Family sued and there you go.. $$%## vacuum fuel switches! I hate 'em.. %##$ worthless lawyers too.. Plus we could see two movies and a cartoon for a nickle!!
She's alive! Runs a hell of lot smoother then when I first brought her home. I had the wrong hose connected to the fuel tank. And when I finally noticed it the battery got drained out. Jumped the battery switched out the hoses and had sprayed starter fluid in the carbs and Vroom! Thanks for all the help guys. Now once I get more practice I'll ride her to firestone and meet all the Subaru guys again.
This is before I took it apart. My nephew wanted a pics. Right now the fairings are still off the bike.
Looks good! glad to hear its running smooth. AWD is right about the chain. Chain's are really expensive, and its better to replace it than to spend time trying to nurse a bad one. Links that rusted on a chain that is probably past due on replacement...get a new one. HORROR stories of guys waiting too long and links busting under strain. Old CBR chains should be a dime a dozen anyhow
